Why not just order it at AT&T or apple and then it comes, you'll have it.

No muss no fuss. Of course its not instant gratification but you'll not be bouncing off the walls trying to find one.

I'm leaving the country tomorrow for ~5months ;) I could have it shipped to someone in the US to ship to me in Australia... but at the point I may as well just buy it unlocked in Australia and not have to deal with the hassle!

Look on Craigslist -- you can find an iPhone 4 within an hour.

I'd prefer to buy it new, and a big part of the point of buying it here in the US is cost. I haven't found any reasonably good deals (IE, subsidized cost) on iPhones on craigslist (nor would I expect to). If I'm going to pay an unsubsidized price, I may as well get it factory unlocked.

Well after buying it in the US plus tax + activation fee + early termination fee + 1 month's bill, you're probably better off buying it unsubsidized (and factory unlocked) from back home.

Here if you got the 16GB, you'd pay:
$199 iPhone base price
~$50 sales tax
$36 activation fee
$325 Early Termination Fee
$58 One month's bill ($40 voice + $15 data plan (200 mb) + tax)

Total: ~ $668

If you bought it unsubsidized in the US, it would just be $599 + tax = ~651

or am I just missing something?
