I completely agree. I'll have to buy an Apple tag to connect to my case... since... you know... the airpods themselves cannot be turned off so we're stuck throwing them in their case all the time with... again... no way to track once they're captive in there. Good job Apple! Feel free to fathom any profanity to follow my last sentence... all of them will work...
Good news: iOS 15 finally fixes this. AirPods are trackable inside the case and essentially work like an AirTag.

Not on earlier AirPods. No sound with them in the case. My wife misplaced hers, weeks of looking with no luck so we bought another set. Then of course she finds them - 100% battery in the case and 75% in the buds. Couldn't play a sound to save our lives.

I now have those same AirPods paired to my XS Max and my 14" MBP - sitting inches from both of them on the desk. The last reported location in FindMy is from 4 days ago when I last used them, and you cannot play a sound.

If you send a sound to them, it starts chirping only when you open the case near the iPhone - then they wake up, report their location and play a sound.

What kind of moronic nonsense is this?

My child lost her AirPods Pro 2 buds. One was in the car and one was under the coffee table. Find My did not locate either, although they were fully charged. Useless.
