For altitude, AirTags would need a barometer it think. There has to be a refresh at some point, probably gaining one. Until then, yes, it’s very futile. I live in a four-story building. I always feel that locating a lost item in here would be futile since it doesn't take altitude into account. And I'm certain it's doable if they wanted to.
I didn't get it to unlock. I got the erase all settings option by holding the side button for 10 seconds while connected to the charger. I don't know if the "find my" was disabled. I just assumed it was after it erased all settings. I don't live in an apartment building and no one came by asking about it.You actually got to unlock it? Or how did you get to that option?
