Find my iphone 3gs?

Hey guys.
Since Find my iphone is only free for iphone 4 and not 3gs or earlier, AND mobileme is closing at 30june, is there no way to protect my iphone from thief?even if i pay?
 
Where does it say that it's only free for the iPhone 4? Then again, I don't really have to worry about this since I paid the $99 for the full MobileMe subscription back in July, and it was just extended for free until July of next year.

I don't see why you couldn't sign up for the free service and then set up a MobileMe account on your iPhone and download the 'Find My iPhone' App from the App Store.
 
It says its only available for the iPhone 4 when you try to download the app "Find My iPhone" from the App Store.
 
Well i have the iphone app but it requires a @me.com account, which i don't have and cannot create.

So what can i do?
From apple's Find my IPhone site:
Find My iPhone is free for anyone with an iPhone 4, iPad, or 4th generation iPod touch (iOS 4.2 or later required).* Just sign in with your Apple ID on your qualifying device and turn on Find My iPhone to allow you to locate it. Then use the same Apple ID to turn on Find My iPhone on your other iOS 4.2 (or later) devices including iPhone 3G, 3GS, or iPod

soooo... to enable Find my Iphone on my 3gs i have to buy an iphone 4 or ipad or 4th gen ipod touch first?? What kind of crap is that?
 
You can use someone else's iPhone 4, iPad 2 or new iPod touch to activate a free mobile me account and then you can use the free find my iPhone feature on a 3GS and 3G.
 
Oh wow, thanks a lot Applejuiced! Didn't know if it was possible at all, really wanted this feature.

cool. Do you guys use the same account?
My brother's buying an ipad 2 soon so I'll get the feature from him, but I'd prefer to use different accounts. Don't wanna be tracked unless lost 😛

Same account for find my iphone but separate accounts for itunes.
