Not a whiner, just a realist.

a realist? LMAO. so somebody losing their iphone and using mobile me to find it, then writing a blog about the experience is somehow unfathomable to you? spare me your response. this is my response: ITS A STORY. just because some minor details MAY have been embellished for entertainment purposes doesn't make the experience he had untrue.

I wonder what the outcome will be when someone reports it stolen and they take this feature to the police and say, "Here's my phone! Get it back!"

Cali's last episode of GeekBrief.tv was dedicated to covering this story. She seemed to know the guy, so I think it's pretty safe to say that the story is true. Give or take maybe a little embellishment here and there (we all do it!).

Jeez, what is wrong with some people, thinking that either everything is a conspiracy or that everyone wants their five minutes of fame?! Pretty sad outlook on life.

Back to the story, it still won't have me shelling out for a MobileMe subscription. Come back to me, Apple, when you offer an affordable monthly subscription, and then maybe...

I believe

If it had been any other ethnic group other than "white" they might have been challenged but minorities know "you hurt white folk EVERYONE gets it".
Scarier for a "black" man to walk in a "white" neighborhood than other way around.
Just remember sometimes the planets do align and things turn out right.

Michael Shermer wrote a great book about people like these.. "Why People Believe Weird Things: Pseudoscience, Superstition, and Other Confusions of Our Time" people with fantasy prone personalities tend to believe in all kinds of crap... creationism, 9/11 was perpetrated by our government, supposed government UFO coverups etc etc

Apple Employee

I call BS on this one, the guy works for apple and was a trainer for tech support on the original iPhone, wants to look cool (totally crappy attitude irl). Props if its true though, lucky you didn't get mugged, Chicago has its nasty parts.

Love this story... and for the rest of you who don't have MobileMe... it's so worth it. Find My iPhone, iWeb publishing, the @me.com email... i was on the fence for a few years about getting it, but I finally did... we enjoy the iWeb thing for our family website... It is cheap... it's only like 10$ a month... thats only a few coffees or a night at the movie. Worth it.

Am I the only one who thinks this sounds a bit too made-up?

I am sure Find My iPhone works this well but I read it and think to myself how good of a story this is right after the release and how easy it is to think people will read this and link to it

Its less than that. $99 if you let Apple auto renew with your CC each year. $6/month if you just buy boxed mobile me from Amazon for $69. Then signup with the code, never enter your credit card, and make a note in iCal to buy another boxed copy from Amazon 11 months later.

Not sure why an iPhone with mobile safari couldn't use this feature. Haven't tried it myself yet.

We had to switch off push notification because the phone battery was dying too quickly. I'd like to see "Find my iPhone" check in periodically (eg: hourly or daily) like email does, and if it sees a "Find iPhone" flag it could then display the message and upload it's location.

Note: our iPhone was suffering a bug with the music sync after the initial upgrade, so perhaps it was sucking power for that reason. Will test that this weekend.

Simply because it happened right after release, and there were some fortunate happenings, it must have been made up, eh?

I don't buy it. He had to be fortunate just to get his iPhone back. Remember, you can just turn off the feature if you know about it.

That was a great story

If I didn't know Kevin, I would have thought is was made up.
However I do know him, and this is the kind of stuff that happens to him.

I'm happy he found his phone.:apple:

How about Findmyi

For JB phones, there's Findmyi - don't have to pay for it 'til you need it. Much more stealthy, from what I can tell...

I think you guys missed on of the biggest things about this story which just boggles my mind: that you can't use me.com from an iPhone...meaning you can't locate an iPhone from another iPhone. That's idiotic! Apple should fix that.

Guys, this story has to be true, i mean who would admit to going to a Lego Convention?

You Actually Can Use An Iphone To Find Another Iphone

What I found out is that YOU ACTUALLY CAN USE AN IPHONE TO FIND ANOTHER IPHONE... just don't use the SAFARI app, use another browser (I have BOLT - free app) as an alternate browser.... you launch it, go to mobileme website, login etc. just as you would do on any computer...
and I think this is a great way to use the FIND MY iPHONE feature...
Ciao

"Find My iPhone" wouldn't even be necessary if Apple simply provided a service by which if a phone/ipod is lost or stolen, the owner can report it stolen to apple, and then if the thief or finder attempts to plug it into a computer to sync or restore the device, the serial number is sent to apple, apple realizes it's a stolen device and contacts the appropriate authorities and provides the itunes account name/address. This was discussed before but people have been killed for their devices and I believe if the above was implemented then this would be deterrant enough to not completely eliminate violence against iphone/ipod owners by thieves, but definitely lower it.

Undercover.

This is like Low Jack, except instead of the cops chasing the bad guy, you get to chase him/her yourself.
If they are smaller than you, have fun. If they are bigger, call the cops for backup.

Does Find My iPhone actually use the iPhone's GPS? I've tried it and the circle is always so big I think it just uses cell tower triangulation?
I've never seen it narrow down enough to track it moving on a street.

I want the guy who had the iPhone to write his account, how he thought he had a free iPhone until a group of geeks came running at him with a MacBook :p

Find my iPhone is a good start, but there's some things that could be better.

1. Password lock on the switch that enables/disables the feature
2. Disable power off and volume changes
3. Is there anything that could be remotely shut off to save battery life? The longer it has charge = the longer it can be tracked.
4. Something to make the phone seem unusable to whoever stole it. A pseudo-Brick my iPhone feature combined with serial number tracking.

Maybe these things are just me. I would appreciate those though. I feel pretty safe about my MBP since I have Undercover and I know that Orbicule has a feature similar to number 4.
