List view in Mavericks: a couple of things

I've started to force myself to use column view/list view. Honestly, I don't like it now (just because I'm used to icon view), but it really is faster.

Faster as in, a sense of Mavericks performing better for Finder?

Or as in, you can more speedily manipulate the keyboard and other input devices?

How do you enable preview?

In list view, the icon (to the left of filename) can be a preview, but the size is limited:

It's in the View menu, very last one before the toolbar options.

Strange, I don't have that option (see screenshot), unless I'm having a brain fart. Are you running Mavericks or Yosemite?

Well, I mainly meant that navigation and manipulation was faster for me, but I do notice that upon a cold boot or opening a folder with several files and images there appears to be a slight increase in the Finder's rendering performance.

Ahhh, that's right! Yeah, I'm in Yosemite.

Also, because of bad habits, my icon view was not organized by name or date. I custom placed each folder. This was very inefficient because although I had muscle memory and could find a folder easily, the slightest change to a Finder window size or going full screen was rendered useless.

The approach now has it's growing pains, but I think it's a more logical way unless you're looking through a folder of images with irrelevant names and trying to find a specific one.

But I've seen previews in Mavericks screenshots too. :(

Time to Google.

You should try a tagging system. Not the main color ones, but in general.

I figured it out, in Mavericks the preview column is only accessible through the view options floating window and it's only for Column View.

I am using tagging systems, but not to their full potential. Im in the process of updating my usage habits to take better advantage of OS X.

Though I do have many issues with Yosemite, I keep discovering more and more little features that I'd love to have. :(

I use a combination on regular basis.
Had been preoccupied for a long time with Finder not keeping the set windows size (and bars). Tried a number of apps like TotalFinder, Forklift 2 etc. in a hope to get a "Total Commander feeling" plus solving the window size problem. Realized that I don't really need it in OS X, like I did in Windows and they were not my cup of tea.
So, with the help of a MR member I found an app that keeps the set window (and sidebar) size of Finder. Now all is well. Plus I always use Finder side by side with EasyFind.

Heh, I know nobody really cares, but what's an internet forum for! :D

Especially now that I'm back in school and about to graduate I have over 40 folders and a multiple of files I'm dealing with on a regular bases. I can't believe how fast I've changed, but icon view is actually somewhat annoying to me now. I've gotten so used to the organization of list view and the utility of column view.

I still use icon view for my home folder and few other cases, but list view looks cleaner to me now (I used to think it looked too cluttered) and it's much nicer to work with. I've been really missing out for over 6 years.

-------------

One sad reality, Finder is kind of slow at times. Things like coping files with command and the option key and even dragging several files across windows and folders can be slow. I don't know if it's Finder or by design.

LOL. Hey, I'm sure you'll benefit from it in the long run too. :D

Yeah, I've noticed that moving stuff is slow too. Stuff that usually should be just a quick drop ends up bringing up the progress bar. Hope it gets fixed in 10.11, heh.

If I have to have fast access between many related folders or files during a specific project (active folder / files set) , icon view sets the visual stage of that project in one window-which is faster as an environment to work with , but if I have to find anything filed (non active) , then column view is the easiest way to find filed work by date ,alphabetically, or contents of files by multiple column view.

Finder tabs were definitely one of my favorites with Mavericks, too.

Now that I'm thinking about it, what if other apps, such as iWork, TextEdit, etc used tabs for their windows as well? I think that would be great, being someone who routinely works with five or more Pages documents open at the same time. The tabs would work just like in the Finder and Safari, so instead of using Mission Control or strategically positioning windows to be able to click to bring a window to the front, you could just click on the tab you want! You listening, Apple? ;)

Have you tried using "Command + Tilde"? It lets you cycle through open windows (that aren't in the dock) for a particular application. I find it to be more efficient than window positioning for most cases.

Hey, thanks for this tip! Works great! Except tabs would be a better solution in the future.

I use a mix of all three depending on the content of the folder, or sometimes the browsing session depending on what I'm looking for. :)

… Finder is kind of slow at times. … I don't know if it's Finder or by design.

In the sub-forum for Mavericks:
– please post details to one of those (I'll find your post later); at a glance, the first might be ideal.

(Misunderstandings of Finder are commonplace so, expect to find some inappropriate advice …)

It's all about Column view.

Heh, what version of OS X is that?

I tired to pick the one that was closest to my issue, but not were exactly it. My Finder isn't slow to populate files in any view and I have only gotten the "beach ball" twice in 6 months, but the first topic was indeed the best.
