When I am in another program and trying to attach an iphoto image, the only way I can do it is by opening iphoto and dragging the actual image.

If I try and attach an image by using finder, the iphoto library is grayed out and I'm unable to access it. It is so cumbersome to have to get to a picture by opening iphoto. I must be doing something wrong.

Can anyone help?

That's supposed to happen - you're not meant to access the photos in your iPhoto library directly from the Finder. If you're using iPhoto '08, this is because the iPhoto Library is stored in a "bundle" format.

Why not? You can right click on the library and select Show Package Contents, then drill down to the photo(s) you want to attach. Still, I think doing this via iPhoto is easier :)
