Finder not showing Books tab for devices to sync

Anyone else have come across this problem where, when connecting an iPad or iPhone to sync and the books tab is missing? This is on a fairly recent and clean install of Ventura 13.6.6 on a M1 Mini. It worked previously and was able to sync before, but now I've tried with two different iPads and an iPhone and no Books tab for all three devices. Possibly a corrupt preference file? Really scratching my head on this one. Yes, I do know there are other ways to sync books, but my parter is a bit set in her ways...Thanks in advance for any insights.

yup, but that's not even close to the worst problem. then of course I checked for my huge collection of books in books app on mac mini - gone! all gone, but I'm running the latest version of Sonoma 14.5.
