Mac Mini M1, Big Sur. When i open Finder from the icon on the dock on a workspace, finder always opens its window on a different workspace. Have to switch workspaces to use it. Very annoyiing.

You might want to check your settings for Finder > Preferences > New Finder windows show.

CTRL click on the Finder Icon in the dock. In the menu that appears, check your setting under Options to see which space the Finder is assigned to (you probably want 'None').

Interesting - Google chrome was not in a desktop. A window was created when Chrome was opened. It was not listed as a Desktop. So the finder would open in an actual Desktop. We cannot reproduce having a window that is not a desktop. any idea how that appeared?

And, today, again opened Chrome and a separate workspace was created for it - i.e. it is not in any of the three desktops listed. So, again, when the finder is opened from the Chrome workspace, the finder window opens in one of the desktops. How does this happen? Why is a separate workspace created for Chrome? When the desktops are listed, we see Desktop 1, Chrome, Desktop 2, and Desktop 3. If Chrome is minimized, it pops into Desktop 1. What is going on? I do not believe this behavior existed in my 2012 intel Mac Mini

I believe this is the expected behaviour when an application is in Full Screen mode. Full screen apps show up as separate 'spaces' in Mission Control.

If you take Chrome out of full screen mode, it will join one of the real spaces (Desktops 1 to 3) as defined under Options in the Dock menu.

Thanks for you reply however, on my M1, option is set to none, and I still can't get the finder to open in my current workspace. Any other suggestions?

What happens when you set Options -> All Desktops? You should see the same Finder windows open on each of your desktops.

With Options -> None you should be able to access the Finder, but any windows you open in one desktop don't show up in the other workspaces (the Finder windows are only visible in the desktop they are opened in)

New Question

Does a finder search continue in 1st workspace when I switch to a 2nd workspace? I'm looking for a way to keep a search and continue working. Thanks.
