All of a sudden my sidebar is gone and all my folders open in new windows instead of the same window. I looked in preferences and everything looks OK. Any way to fix this?

On the left of the finder window there should be a dot about halfway down. Drag that to the right and the side bar will appear.

Opening in a new window is how i prefer it but if you want to change it go to Finder > Preferences > General and there should be a tick box to 'open folders in new windows'. Just uncheck it.

Did you accidentally click the pill button on the right side of a Finder window? This will cause the behavior you describe. To return it to normal just click the pill again.

That was it! After 3+ years I am still a Mac nooob. Thanks :)
