Forever--- I tried doing this, it didn't help in my case.

I added some OWC memory into my system a couple of weeks back, around the time it seemed that this problem cropped up. I pulled that memory out this morning and tried the system again.. Nope, the Finder windows keep crashing. I have noted that I can have applications open on the desktop, but when Finder crashes, it is *only* Finder that takes a dump. My apps do not crash or hang up or anything.. This is all purely a Finder issue. And yes, I am seeing the crash happen frequently when using the right button on my mouse.. In fact, Finder for me crashes much more often than not when using that right mouse button. It may still be related to some sort of software that was installed way back, and has left something bad in one of the contextual menus. A one-time reinstall of OS X might well resolve the issue, it's just a lot of work for many of us to have to do that!

anyone know what that hittoolbox thingie is in the crash log? o and so far right click doesn't crash it. It only does is on a regularly basis when I do the dmg thing or open and modify a file.

I was just going to post something like this here and realized there is a thread already. I notice that the finder changes happened after the ichat update, and it doesn't seem to be the DMG issue, i tried that test but for me its really random, i have no idea when it restarts, just out of no where...

any one have heard from apple about this? mine is a macbook pro c2d.

Is there is a way to uninstall this ichat update?

Or any update for that matter...

Come to think of it, I'd say my problems started up very close to the time this particular update came rolling in.

Steve

By golly, after applying this patch the problem appears fixed! Thanks Brendan, that's a good find! :)

I'll continue to watch this over the next day or so, if I see any future issues here, I'll be sure to report back.

I haven't had any crashes since uninstalling StuffIt Deluxe and reinstalled with the patched CM. Looks good so far, but I don't want to jinx it :p

amazing!

This patch seems to have fixed my problems as well. Not had any crashes since patching up stuffit.

Good work on finding the solution brendanw! :)

Finder windows randomly closing and reloading!

I am having the same finder crashing issues as you all have discribed on 2 macmini's and a G4 Powerbook - all running system 10.4.8....where the finder windows all close and restart at tiimes when I am clicking (left or right) on icons on the desktop and/or navigating through folders and files on the desktop.

Has anyone found what's causing this and/or work-around and/or fix? Like most, I've done numberous archive and installs, clean disc installs, etc.

I have attempted to upload a pdf file from recent posting on this issue on 123Macmini.com.

thanks - Rob

Has anyone used the fix supplied above, and when looking in the Contextual Menu Items folder there was no stuffitcm.plugin to delete and replace?

In this case does the fix still work if you just save the new stuffitcm.plugin into the folder?

Blind Buzzard: Do you have Stuffit installed? If not, you won't have the plugin.

As I type this, Finder is crashing in the background (about every 30 seconds). The problem started when I installed the iTunes 7.1/Quicktime updates that Apple just pushed out.

I'm having the problem as well, I tried the stuffit thing but it didn't work (at least not yet). I'll keep messing around with it I guess. I installed the latest Security and itunes updates last night.

I just encountered this problem as well.

I don't have stuffit installed either.

Finder windows randomly closing and reloading!

I'm running 10.4.11 and have this random finder crash problem too.

I've read that stuffit has a contextual menu issue and the patch can perhaps fix it but. . .

all the downloads are "zipped" (ok for crying out loud who zips a mac file to begin with) and since I can't seem to unzip the stupid file and STUFFIT won't unzip it- why wont the freakin program unzip its own patch?
Now I've been searching for a way to unzip the file and all the unzip for mac programs seem to be .exe files? Where did all the real Mac people go?

Are all the fixes for macs now made by windows folks?

The Beauty of macs has ALWAYS been plug and play, what happened?

Finder windows randomly closing and reloading!

Ok I know I just posted but here is the best fix I've found so far.

First let me say I'm an Impatient Artist and hate to have to fix anything.
I'm running a desktop Mac OS10.4.11 so that I can still run classic and my issues were: any open finder windows would close and all desktop icons would reset every few minutes regardless of what I was doing. Open applications continued to run ok but the process of copying files was being interrupted and corrupting the copied files at the point the reset happened. This prevented me from copying anything larger than about 50 megs to any other drive or network storage. My Monitor was also being reset randomly and screen would black out momentarily during use. (Painfully irritating while trying to work in photoshop)

YES- Stuffit is the ISSUE. No you can't uninstall it easily unless you download the File "NukeStuffitMacV2.3" from their site.

It will remove all versions of stuffit along with the contextual menus.

After downloading it (It downloads uncompressed and quickly)

Run it. Restart your computer and empty the trash.

FIXED!!! Worked very well for me.

You can then download and install the latest version of free stuffit that works just fine with no issues I can find.

Stuffit- should be fined somehow for this bug since it was part of a periodic released upgrade and thy KNOW its a bug. They are not being proactive about helping people identify it and fix it.
