finding out firmware prior to purchase?

Is there any way to find out the firmware version of the iPhone, without actually opening the box? I'm going to be in an Apple store sometime this week, but want to make sure I'm not buying an iPhone that has 1.1.3 in it already.

Also is there a way to know if it comes with a 5 series or a 7 series screen before opening?

Im 99% sure that any iPhone you would buy now would be with 1.1.3...

check the 4th and 5th number on the serial on the box
