For finer volume control on the Mac keyboard, I can do Shift + Option and the volume is incremented or reduced in quarter steps. What if I want a still finer increment - say, one-eight steps. How do I do that?

That has to be a way - this is MacOS, after all.

I need the finer control because my external speaker is loud even at its minimum.

So your external speaker coupled with 1/4 volume (1/48 of the full 16 bars) is still loud? Erm… does your external speaker have volume control? If you're using something like iTunes, that program also has volume control. So do almost all video/music playing platforms (YouTube, QuickTime, etc.) And no, there is no 1/8 volume AFAIK.

I know there is a way to do finer increments that involves AppleScript. I hope someone here can chime in.

There is no way to do this in Mac OS X. Do you have an external volume control for the speaker? If so, use that. If not, you're out of luck.
