iPod Finicky iPod Alarm

3rd Gen 30GB iPod, latest firmware.

The alarm is set to wake me up with music (connected to external speakers). When I test it by setting the alarm for 3 minutes from the present, it works fine, but when I set it for the morning, it does not.

Any experience/tips?
