why would you want to use a slower browser than what apple has already made?

After this, I don't believe that there will be a slower browser than Safari. ;)

Interesting to me, I got another nightly build today, so there must be something else happening for it not to send me the final build.

Many thanks! All the 2.0 RC builds have been crashing on me. We'll see how this one works.

Does anyone have the problem of FF 2 not closing down properly? I thought it was because I was using it as beta software, but now that it's a proper release I think it may be an FF bug.

Description: Go to FF->Quit FF
Browser window closes but browser remains active.

This has been causing problems when I shut down the computer.

I'm a big fan of Firefox and use it exclusively on Windows.

However, Mac OS X has great built in features like keychain. Seems like a no brainer for Firefox to have a plugin mechanism and use keychain when on Mac OS X. But for some odd reason, they don't want to allow support for keychain claiming they don't want to add platform specific features, even though they're clearly targeting Windows as the platform by duplicating features already in Mac OS X. FF 2.0 also includes a dictionary to spell check entries, again ignoring the fact that Mac OS X can already do that if they'd integrate with it.

Because of their refusal to allow integration with Mac OS X, I gave Safari a try and have been pleasantly surprised. I now use Safari exclusively on the Mac except when I find a page that doesn't work, then I give FF a try. I've found safariblock for adblocking, and "autocomplete always on" to allow Safari to fill in all passwords. For my needs it has as much or more function than Firefox.

If there's a worse program at mail than Entourage, I don't know of it.
Ouch! But spot on, Entourage really, really sucks! I think it takes the cake, hands down.

I downloaded Firefox RC3 last week and ran it a couple times. Nothing there. It still runs slow as molasses on my 12" PB. I dunno why, I realise its fast on some machines, but for me, its the worst of the lot; Safari blows it out of the water and Camino is 2nd only to Safari. I dunno, even with the final 2.0, it takes over a minute to just start up! And I have over 1GB RAM!

So its Safari and Camino for me.

EDIT: I use Firefox almost exclusively on my PC. IE7 is looking good though, and dare I admit it? Better UI than Firefox! I'm trying it out for a couple days. We'll see.

Try Shiira. If the beta weren't so buggy, I'd recommend it because it's blazing fast. Still, the stable build is pretty good.

p.s. if you have more than a gig of ram, you might consider updating your sig;)

i just downloaded firefox 2.0 and compared it to camino and safari. safari is the fastest, camino is close and firefox 2.0 was last. i didn't realize safari was that fast. guys i have safari version 2.0.4. is this the latest release? if not what is and where can i get it from?

I wish it was blazing fast everywhere but it isn't for me. I found something odd today. There is an extension for Firefox that duplicates Tab Exposé that was developed for Shiira. In any case, for me, Fox catches Fish.

2.0.4 is the latest version of Safari. You can always make sure you have the latest simply by using Software Update and it will display updates to whatever Apple software you have installed.

I just downloaded it, the new features especially on the tab-bar look good :) And it is faster too, but IMO it can't beat Safari for raw speed - especially when starting up. But i'll stick with it for a while.

didn't safari 2.0.4 come out in 2005? if so its been a long time for an update and its still faster than everything else.

Thanks for the tip. Shiira looks hot, and I'm gonna go ahead and try the beta (over the stable release) right now. Just to mess around and see. I've never used it before, so fingers are crossed.

And yeah... I upgraded my RAM this summer, but I've been too lazy to update the sig. I'll get to it one of these fine days :)

Safari is the only browser I'm currently using, but I have tried Firefox, Camino, and Opera in the past. I will go look into Firefox 2.0 and Shiira, though. Shiira in particular looks very nice. :)

Maybe a stupid question, but what about Mac/Windows compatibility? As a web designer is what you see in FF Mac the same as what you see in FF Win as opposed to Safari and IE being completely different? (Yes I know IE is in a world of it's own though).

Developer tools. Thats the winner for me when coding.

For run of the mill browsing I actually use safari just because it was there when I got the mac and kinda got into using it.

The rendering engine is the same so 99% of the time what you see in FF on Windows will look the same as FF on OS X and Linux.

The only time I've found some differences is with the way fonts are rendered, which may result in slightly different font sizes and font spacing, especially if you use "pt" units in CSS. If I'm not mistaken points are tied to the DPI of the screen, which varies quite a lot.

I usually use keywords "small", "medium", etc. at the <body> element in CSS and haven't found any issues with this between Windows and OS X.

I think there may have been limited occasions of this discussed here in the past, but yes, it seems like the 99% is probably about right. I know it makes me feel "comfortable" (not as a web designer) for the same reason... I don't particularly feel at home on Windows anymore, but at least in my Firefox window I do. :)

One thing that really bugs me about 2.0, especially on OS X, is that if you always have the tab bar showing and you press Cmd+W to close the last tab it now doesn't close the window anymore - it simply blanks out the tab.

Apparently this is "by design" to make behaviour more consistent! Now if you set the tab bar to not show if you only have one tab then Cmd+W works as before and closes the window when you close the last tab.

Wonder what the developers were smoking at the time since on OS X at least Cmd+W generally does just that - close the window. Sadly I haven't found a way of getting the old behaviour back.

Yeah I noticed that too and found it very irritating.... so I made it hide the tab bar when there was only one page being viewed..... which is kinda lame..

I seem to have a problem now with FireFox.... when I leave it open for long periods at a time, and go to sites, the images on the site doesn't load, or the site will just load all messed up. I have to quit FireFox and reopen it to restore order. I shouldn't have to do that........ it's pretty annoying and I don't get it. Anyone else have this problem?

Because of this I'm going back to my Camino.

I downloaded FF2 the other day. It's running fine on my Powerbook. It has built in spell-check apparently. I like its look, and the way the bookmark drop-downs look and work.

Yea, spellcheck has only been a known feature for the past few months or so...or longer...

Well I just downloaded it! And honestly Im disapointed! Its running much slower than Safari on my Mac Book. Infact the time it took to load a page was the same amount of time it took me to start up safari and then load the same page.

Im sticking to safari! Go Mac!:)

I've had that problem with Camino and Firefox 1.x but haven't seen it for a long time with the Firefox 2 nightly builds.

I am also having issues, although not the same issue. My issue is that once every 4th or 5th open firefox just sits there and the beach ball starts spinning. After about 30 seconds I get fed up and force quit it. I even tried zapping firefox and reinstalling it fresh, I don't mind since i use google sync.

Come to think of it, it might be google sync screwing with it.

As for the people saying safari is faster, on my Macbook its about the same. I also noticed that Safari will open more quickly once you have opened it once without a restart. Makes me wonder if it loads something into resident memory and doesn't get rid of it upon quitting.
