Big update for Firefox. Speeds are way up, that's the (only) good news.

The bad: it kills nearly all addons. More importantly, it killed Noscript and the beta version for FF57 is horribly crippled. It;s an addon that I basically require for my work.

I've downgraded to 56. Running 10.11 here

Try this to replace No Script: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/no-script-suite-lite-revived/

There is also https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noscript/ which wasn't available a few weeks back.

I'd get rid of the old add-ons and extensions and search for their replacements using the new API.
[doublepost=1512216976][/doublepost]also 57.0.1 is out. You might upgrade. At home and work I've been on 57.0.0 for a few weeks and have not experienced issues. Being a web developer for a large company means we would have experienced customer calls had there been major issues with the browser.

The difference in speed is quite remarkable - it feels as fast (if not faster in some instances) as Chrome, so I'm seriously considering switching back to Firefox.

The main downside I see is that some of the addons I previously used are incompatible with it.

Other than that, can someone tell me what exactly is the point of the blue line on top of each tab?

Seems kind of unnecessary, since the active tab itself is already highlighted...

I thought so too, and the tabs look kind of "klunky" and square as compared with tabs on the previous versions of Firefox.

There seems to be something added function-wise in the new tabs - I noticed when a search got hung for a moment the blue top did not load and there also seems to be a progress function on each tab flashing across the tab ( percentage of content loaded?) for each tab when loading as a well as the busy indicator has been changed to 2 dots and a "see-saw" kind of effect.

Don't blame them from moving away to the rotating circles.

Not sure why the reload was repositioned.

Hope they fix the cosmetic look of the tabs and am wondering if there are other Features in these new tabs?

Edit - Oh and as mentioned above it does seem much faster and smoother.

FF57: butt-ugly, don't like that "Pocket" $#!t (whatever that is), and I loved my good ol' resizable search bar, don't like that most of my addons don't work, and that it forced the update on me without asking the boss' permission.

:(

Code:
for i in 0..<5 {
      thumbsDownForFF57()
}

I'm not a fan of these square tabs either.. any userChrome codes to fix them?

I hadn't used Firefox in literally years but gave it a go with Quantum came out. This means that, unlike many people, I don't have any issues with extensions that don't work, as I had none to start with :)

At first, I thought I'd soon switch back to Safari as I miss keychain access and the smooth pinch-to-zoom. However, I stuck with it. I've been using it exclusively (well, the nightly version) for a couple of weeks now and I'm happy with it. Part of the reason is I like tinkering and once I discovered userchrome.css (with help from https://www.reddit.com/r/FirefoxCSS) I've got a layout I'm really happy with.

I'm using Lastpass (the free version) to replace the keychain as I found the built-in Firefox login/password function lacking. I've enabled pinch to zoom (lots of stuff can be done in about:config) but it's very jerky. I still miss Safari's smoothness there.

One major benefit for me is that I like to delete all cookies (apart from some favourites) on browser exit. Safari's cookie management is not good, and I had to use a SIMBL plug-in called Cookies which involved injecting code into a modified (signature removed) copy of Safari. Firefox has great cookie management once I learnt how to configure it properly.

It took over two minutes for it to shutdown a few days ago. I've had stalls using it, and I'm at the current version. Not to impressed. Looks like they moved the cheese, but didn't actually 'fix' much.

Also the 'wagging dots' on loading tabs looks like the same style 'wagging dots' in the FireFox browser on Ubunto, so it's a continuation of that theme. The circular icon told more information like was the website contacted, was it actually loading, not sure of the dots...

Love the speed, noticeably faster than Safari. Now, just need an option/extension to stop autoplay on videos.

One thing that bothers me: why can't I drag and drop a picture from Firefox onto my desktop? It works perfectly in Chrome, for example.

It seems to work with .png files, but not with .jpg. Any ideas?

Firefox 57.0.1 - Drag and Drop works with .jpg files for me - might have been something specific to the web page?

Update - also was able to get all my add-ons and plugins updated and working (execpt garmin and Firebug - no big deal) - I had the updates set to manual, once updated everything seems good

And the scrolling on web pages is a HUGE improvement.

yes it works - try holding the picture for a second before releasing to the desktop.

opened it in preview and it shows as a JPEG

Does not seem to save the extension (.jpeg) with the file name

I have the same headphones :D

I get the .jpeg when I drag and drop. You might have your Finder Prefs set to hide extensions.

Been playing with 57.0.1 for a day. It's faster than 56. The dark theme is easy to modify. I did not lose much ion the way of extensions or plugins. There don't seem to be any heinous "report all keystrokes back to Mozilla" type prefs or "features".
It'll take a little getting used to, but so far looks like a keeper.

Strange!

Finder prefs are ok - tried it with the Firefox developer edition and extension shows on drag / drop - tried again with 57.0.1 and no extension - might be a setting in FF 57.0.1

I am hoping there is a tweek in the config files to show extension and maybe also to increase the size of the search window ( back to previous size).

Need to dig around

Has anyone using firefox 57 found a way to make the search box window larger in the tool bar? this is one of the key features for me - but in this new version, the search window is so small you can only type a few words without it scrolling behind the tool bar.

Might be something in the about:config settings.
I was at least able to to turn off the "pocket" stuff cluttering up the address box thru there.
Didn't see a search box field width item in about:config, but it might be there.

lol @ kills all add-ons

Till everyone develops for it that is..

The biggest issue i held back from FF 57.0 the change to how Mozilla protects your privacy.. There is only an option now to send the Do-Not-Track (DNT) request to *tell* web server NOT to track, something which is not compliance... *so how do u really know they will honer it ?*

Also, latest version of stable and beta Lastpass no longer remembers login info, *unless cookies are set*, which means in FF57, forces users to not be in private browsing...

In this state, tracking protection in not enabled... Another thing i have a quibble over.

When I drag and drop it I get a blank white icon on desktop (not a jpg file).

I updated to the beta version 58.0b12 - the bug with the drag and drop is fixed and all my plugins / add ons are working - had to update a few to get them working.

Still hate the small search window, but at least it has one.
