There are lots of web browsers to use on Macs, and I'm wondering which one I should use, appart of Safari (and certainly not Chrome!). About security of web browsing and eradication of ads, which one is better/fastest/more reliable and trustable? Firefox (with the free uBlock plugin), Brave or Tor? I'm writing this message on Tor right now, and it's slow as hell!
Firefox is my go-to for MacOS. Sadly Firefox on iPad lacks key features, for some reason, like auto-clear web content every time the app launches. This ability has been super reliable on MacOS though, for many years, for me. I used to use Tor but yeah it’s too slow and the frequent issues with it serving sites as if you are in another country grew too inconvenient for me.

I don't do anything involving confidential information on my iOS and iPadOS devices. So I use a stripped down version of Firefox, Firefox Focus, and the DuckDuckGo mobile browser. I think either or both of these have a "clear on launch" setting.

If you've got to use a VPN, which should all be assumed to be compromised, mullvad lets you pay with mailed cash. If you've ever seen a YouTube ad for a VPN service, it's a VPN service you shouldn't be using.

The good thing about using Firefox on iOS is that you still have access to your bookmarks, if you sign-in with your Mozilla account. Plus you have the protection of Firefox Focus, if you download that app and configure Safari to use it as an extension (for ad-blocking); Safari is the engine underneath any browser on iOS, so the Focus extension will protect any browser of your choice on iPhone/iPad.

Chrome developers only care about parsing through your data to serve ads to you; further, Chrome is a resource hog.
Chrome is not a resource hog. Chrome uses resources that are available, just like native apps do, which is great. Poorly coded is another story, for both.

The question:
"Firefox, Brave or Tor?"

The answer:
All three -- and more:

- Dissenter
- Opera
- iCab

My primary browser has been Firefox (in various incarnations), since about 2001. My backup is Brave (I met Eich in 2008 at a Mozilla conference). Sometimes I will use Edge (if on Windows) or Safari if the other two don't work. I've been happy with this combination for quite some time.

On iPhone and iPad, I just use Brave.
