What type of machine is it, how much RAM do you have, and what version of Firefox is it? What I've seen is that when you have a lot of RAM, applications tend to become more liberal with it. As for the CPU, I have no idea why it's high. I use Safari 3 and I'm using about 85MB real memory, 900 MB virtual with 7 tabs open on a MBP 2.16 with 3GB RAM.

You may want to look into Camino (from Mozilla) or the new Firefox 3 beta that just came out a few days ago. I've heard that they have crushed a bunch of bugs and it runs very fast. Just remember rename the beta version so that it doesn't interfere with your original install of Firefox.

cpu usage spikes (~3 sec) to 70~90% is normal for most website with little flash content.

CPU usage stays high are still normal if you kept surfing website with huge amount of flash content

CPU usage staying high is NOT normal with website has little flash content.

Which case best describe your situation?

423 Real Memory is pretty high, UNLESS you have been using it for very long time and with significant amount of flash content.

If you have 4G memory, that might be different, app tends to use more when you have more physical memory installed.

In any situation, if you don't have too many extensions (As my personal experience, adblock, firegestures are compatible), firefox 3 beta 3 should be perfect option for you now.

i have an ibook g4 with 1.25gb of RAM its firefox 2.0.0.11
what was annoying was that i had hardly any memory left to run other programs cos it was so sluggish.
its fine now 141mb real and 383 virtual
this is with 2 tabs open

last nite i had 3 tabs opened

were you surfing flash heavy website when memory, cpu usage stayed high?
