Oh no! So now the new account behavior is the same as your old admin account?
No, think you misanderstood me here. But after having deleted the Library/application and preferences I experienced this.
After having made a new account it all works for this "new" user but not for me the adm.

This is not my native language, so maybe sometimes I express my self with wrong words/expressions.

Found some directions for clearing the Java cache, which is different than the browser cache.

Open: /Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences
Network tab, Delete files button

You can also click the View Cache Files button and see if you're bank is listed. You can also take look see over the Advanced tab, but I'm not sure what you may want to check on.

Thanks. But this was already tried and (apparently) didn't help.

I keep wondering if that MRJ Plugin is somehow the problem for Firefox. As a test, temporarily move that plugin out of its current folder. Then create another new account and see if Java works with Firefox. If it does, that suggests that the MRJ Plugin is not needed at all. (Where did it come from? This is a new iMac running 10.6.4?) Then logout and login again to the new account and see if Java is still working.

One other silly thought. Repair permissions. I only suggest this because I see Java mentioned a lot when I repair permissions. Though why this would affect just Firefox I have no idea.

Do you ever sleep? :)

I misunderstood, but your English is fine. So the problem occurs only on the original admin account, and removing the Firefox preferences there makes no difference. (You did quit and restart Firefox after removing the preferences, right?) I'm baffled.

I would start with the working account. Find the Firefox files there, copy them to the same place on the non-working account, see what happens.

Here's how I'd approach it, but since I don't have Firefox this might not work.

First, login to the account where Java works. Second, find all the files that are likely to be Firefox preference or config files. Here's a Terminal command line to do it:
Code:
find Library -type f | grep -i firefox | grep -v Cache
Copy and paste that single line exactly as given into a Terminal.app window.

The output should be a list of pathnames that contain the word "firefox" in any case (e.g. "FireFox" or "Firefox" or "firefox"), with anything named "Cache" excluded.

Post the output, if any.

If it lists some prefs file or config file that you haven't tried deleting in the non-working account, then try deleting it. This should only be done when Firefox isn't running, otherwise it might just rewrite its non-working data.

I want to see what the actual output is before I suggest anything else.

Also, did you try looking in Console.app for any messages, as I suggested earlier?

It may also be helpful if you go to Utilities/Java Preferences --> Advanced and select Show console in the Java console section. Then try Firefox on a site that has failed and see what comes up in the Java console.

I think I have read through the suggestions and repeated all of it, but situation is the same:
Safari Chrome and Opera shows the applet on Java test site correct.
Firefox failes.
But when I am logged in as "guest" or "new user" it shows the applet correct.
How can my iMac treat me like this? Must be said that at this point I am comfortable using the other browsers. A bit afraid to mess up anything that works when I´m visiting places I´m not too familiar with!

That output indicates that your don't appear to have any Firefox preferences in strange places. So, one more time, try this. Quit Firefox. Temporarily move the Firefox folder from Library/Application Support to your Desktop. Also move the file Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist to your Desktop. Restart Firefox and try a Java applet.

Think I tried that. The Javaconsole popped up in Chrome but never in Firefox.

I found this diagnostic report in Library>Logs> but do not know if it has any relevance:

I am now going to delete everything Mozilla/Firefoxrelated, then try to download again and install - as a (last?) attempt.

About the crash report---what version of Firefox is this?

[EDIT] OK, this was Firefox 4 beta, and the plugin-container.app isn't finding libxpcom, which is located in a parent directory. I assume you were just testing FF 4.

I just downloaded the latest version and mounted the disk image. There is no /Volumes/Firefox/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/plugin-container.app

I see only these:

Now here in Firefox 3.6.8. Same things happens.

Problem solved. May be not the easiest way but I erased the macintosh hd and reinstalled mac os. Found this at

http://www.gballard.net/macrant/osx_troubleshooting.html

"When a computer starts acting flaky — unstable, crashing, freezing or generally misbehaving — it's a corruption issue 98 percent of the time"

"If the problem has NOT cleared in the Spare User, then it is most likely a System-wide, or hardware problem -- remove 3rd-party hardware and suspected bad preferences from the Hard Drive> Library> Preferences folder.

If the problem has cleared in Spare User, then the main user has corruption, or bad fonts activated that doesn't exist in our user account -- remove suspected bad preferences from the Hard Drive> Users> Name> Library> Preferences folder."

Since i tried all of this and it did not work and the trouble appeared only in the adminaccount I decided to reinstall. As a bonus the startup time is shorter and the machine more responsive.
