Hmm... what's the point in having a site devoted to doing a google search on macrumors when you can just use google itself?

Just search for:
"site:forums.macrumors.com KEYWORDS"

Convenience! if you notice, it automatically puts in the
site:forums.macrumors.com
for you, so you don't have to type it.

Try out 1Password. Great support (but not free).

Then, you can also try Camino, or others, if you want.

Ya, I have tried it, back when it used Keychain, but not Safari's keychains. I think they integrated it, but the cost of the application, and the fact FF3's password manager has been recoded to allow easier integration with any OS's version of Keychain, makes me not want to buy 1password, and wait for either a plugin, add-on, or native FF3 integration.

I believe FF uses OS X's dictionary now too, that was another reason to stick with Safari, I have many acronyms that I have added to the dictionary, and do not want to add them again. The Keychain is the main factor though. I will wait.

I just moved from Mutt to Thunderbird as a trial, to see if I like it. So far not bad, but I have specific IMAP requirements. I need not just IDLE but IMAPENHANCED_IDLE. It seems to have it down, but its hard to tell if its looking in each directory, or actually listening to the IMAP connection.
Back on topic.

FF3 is a good browser, but not necessarily better than Safari (with Saft and inquisitor) but that is my opinion.

The *only* reason I still use Safari as my main browser (as opposed to Camino or FF3) is the plugin AcidSearch, but the developer hasn't released an updated and/or fully-stable version in some time. (He's very responsive to emails, but says he can't afford to take time off from his regular computer job to work on it because so few people pay the shareware fee.)

So 1Password may not be as useful if FF3 integrates with the keychain, but as of this morning they did release a new version with the ability to select bookmarks from a 1P menu and have it log in automatically from there.

what are the interesting features you use with acidsearch that firefox 3 doesn't offer without addons? Let me know maybe I can find some addons for it, if needed. :)

I like Safari, but I use Firefox 3.x, and I don't even use third-party plugins (all I use is Weave to sync bookmarks, and that's a mozilla project). FF is very fast and stable now. But then, so is Safari. I interchange them quite a bit.

It allows you to create a list of customizable search engines which are available both in the menubar *and* by right-clicking on a highlighted word (when you release a new tab opens [or window, however you set it] with the search results already displayed). (So you don't even have a do any typing to search for a term's page at Wikipedia, or an app's listing at VersionTracker, or a movie at imdb, and so on [those are some of my engines]).

If there's something in FF which does the same that would be fantastic. I've posted a question to that effect in various forums on occasion, but no one ever answers (it probably sounds like I'm trying to get someone else to do my legwork for me.)

(I actually go back and forth between a processor-specific version of FF [Minefield] and the standard, but I assume that shouldn't matter [I *want* to use the G5 because I like the idea, but there's often one or two really minor things which aren't functional in it for me.])

well, the question needs to be sliced and diced :D

1. Firefox's search field (right to the urlbar,) has pull down list offers search engines you can pick.

2. whenever you visit a website that offers a search engine, such as wiki[edia.com, you will find the small triangle of search field button of firefox (by default is google) has a blue cloud around it, click that, you can see an "add this search engine to my list" option.

3. here you can search and add thousands of search engines http://mycroft.mozdev.org/

4. your context menu search within browser is always using the engine selected in the search field. e.g., if your search field is set to wiki, then when you context click highlighted text, the search options will be wiki as well.

5. some addons such as easy drag and go. you can select the text, drag it an small distance and throw it, it will open a foreground/background tab and search for it. no right click is needed.

6. another addon (probably more) context search can let you pick search engines from context click

7. you can scroll mice on the search field to change search engine by using scroll search engines

There are 600+ addons of firefox labeled "search", I know its alot, just go through top 100 downloads from here https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:1/cat:13?show=100&sort=popular&exp=on

Im not exactly sure if these are your needs, let me know if there are are specific things you want :)

Hey thanks

It looks like Context Search might be the equivalent, I'm going to install along with some search engines and give it a spin.

nice, go ahead try out

I found context search+Easy dragtogo works best for ME. I can context and select engines to search, or i can just drag and throw the text to search with google...:)
