Firewire 800 Dumb Question

Hi
Newbie here.... Does a firewire 800 port power a portable HDD like a usb port does. I have a new iMac and would like to free up one of the usb ports used by my time machine HDD. Obviously I know I would need a portable HDD that has a firewire 800 connection.

FireWire can power 2.5" HD (i.e. portable HD)
