'08 Mac pro kernal panics every time i turn on my firewire recording interface, an echo audiofire 12. the strange thing is, it runs fine if i turn the interface on before booting the computer.

anyone else having similar problems w/firewire devices? any thoughts on how to fix this problem?

I had one today, in fact. I use a Sonus Firebox to run my KRK studio monitors and I've had quite a few kernal panics. Today's was the first I could 100% 'blame' as a firewire problem. I had to unplug the Firebox from my computer and reattach it and instantly a kernal panic occurred.

The previous ones i have a suspicion were due to firewire problems as well, but in those cases it was probably due to the Firebox being plugged into a Sonnet Firewire card, which apparently doesn't work (incompatible chip AND a combo of USB/Firewire = big problems)
