Does anyone know how I can connect my old firewire 800 drives and peripherals to the new USB-C (Thunderbolt 3) ports? What I found so far is Apple's 'Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter' ($29) coupled with Apple's 'Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt 3 adapter' ($49), or an OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock ($299). I would be great to just have one small adapter that is cheaper than the above two alternatives.

You need the 2 Apple adapters.

Agreed with chrfr.
You need either the 2 cables, or possibly a "dock solution" (if there is one).

One other thing (and I could be wrong):
I -think- that I recall reading that "firewire bus power" doesn't work with the "2-cable solution", because one of the adapters does not "pass power through".
If that's the case, your firewire device needs to provide its own power (power block, etc.).
As an example, a small external "bus powered" firewire drive might not work.
Again, I may have that wrong.
