EDIT: All of the threads posted previously on this subject are very old, so just double checking to see if anything new has come up since then.

I dont know the technical terms, but I have a Firewire External HD that I used with my 2006 Macbook, up until about a year ago.

I now have a 2009 iMac, which obviously does not have Firewire.

Is there a firewire>usb adapter, or what are my options for connecting this external HD to my iMac?

You need a Firewire 800 to 400 converter. Here are some on Amazon:
