Just saw that this thing has a single, small, 10W speaker. It’s probably safe to figure on this thing sounding like tinny, hot garbage, for $250 no less.

Sounds like you just need to do a better job of choosing your friends. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If only it were that simple. Unfortunately, life has a way of putting other people around you. Public, various community functions, workplaces, etc. you could eliminate every “friend” from your life, and still be surrounded by gossip.

Not sure why there is a major fuss over the 10 year thing.

Most tech these days is long past it's realistic life after far less than 10 years.
Apart from things like lights, or a radio.

I'd hope very much so that virtual assistants etc will be vastly more advanced, and way better devices that use them will be on sale far sooner than 10 years from now.

Right now I have a Leviton light switch that went AOL. PITA to re-pair that thing so it's just a "dumb" switch until I get frustrated or bored enough to fix it. That switch is on my LL which has the best Wi-Fi in the house. Meanwhile the same switch in my loft on the 4th level, most unreliable Wi-Fi in the house works fine as does the nearby LIFX bulb (plugged into a lamp, not on the Leviton switch).

I have the same issue with a Leviton wi-fi dimmer that refuses to connect to a wi-fi network. Leviton's TS has no idea how to fix it and escalated the issue. Mine is also in one of the best reception areas in the house. I installed it to allow turning on a light when someone comes home let at night so they don't come into a dark house.

The Safe and Sound is 50 bucks off for Prime Day.
I'm getting one just to try it out, but even at $200 I will promptly return if it has issues actually being a "smart" detector like some reviews say, with regards to staying connected, showing timely alerts from the app, and being able to quickly kill false alarms from my phone. I don't expect much from the speaker, but if it's in the realm of "good enough" then I'll be happy to add it as an AirPlay 2 speaker when (if?) they finally roll that out.
