Multicore score on the Config B (comparable to M3 in consumption) is like 14K compared to the M3 which is 11.7KNah, they're barely managing to catch up with M2 Max in CPU, GPU is much worse.

Well that's a question to that specific build tool. Builds can be done in parallel and many do so.The build tool I (have to) use disagrees.![]()
From the presentation, it seemed like they were trying to address the people still using Intel machines. Which is probably a big group, given that a lot of people will eke out 5 years' use from their computers. Those people are in for a treat, honestly. Going from my 2020 Intel i5 Air to the M1 Air gave me a Mac with 2-3x the battery life, zero fan noise, and what felt like 2x the responsiveness. Such a huge difference. Looks like it takes a few years worth of Apple Silicon updates to equal that jump.I completely agree. The reason I bought the 15 inch Air wasn’t because I needed a faster machine but because I could use a new laptop and liked the form factor. Apple needs to give us more than simple tech bumps to make upgrading attractive to many M1 and M2 owners moving forward.
It's quite easy to re-map them. I have them all mapped to Windows-esque shortcuts with command being the bottom left key, because the ergonomics of the command key being beside the space bar is just terrible. All other shortcuts are quite similar.I would've gotten myself a Mac long ago, if the keyboard layout and keyboard shortcuts weren't so friggin inefficient and annoying.
8Gb RAM shouldn't exist at all, it's like phone-level amount of RAM in 2023. Right after start MacOS is 2-3Gb and +/-1.2Gb is uncompressable and unswappable RAM for GPU.
More horsepower is never a bad thing imo. I am more than happy to pay for a bit extra performance headroom. The 14" MBP with just the M3 is the perfect laptop for me. I don't need the power of the Pro or Max line. But I went for the 14" MBP M1 Pro for the screen.
Because no efficiency cores, only performance ones. Most probably higher idle/low usage power consumption and lower battery life.Multicore score on the Config B (comparable to M3 in consumption) is like 14K compared to the M3 which is 11.7K
But there is no M3 Max Mac Studio. So it doesn't matter that the M2 Max Studio was released in June and they just released some new Mac models with M3-family chips, because none of those other Macs are Studios. When Apple releases a M3 Max Studio, then you'll have an apples-to-apples comparison, no pun intended, and a timeline that applies to your statement. It's obvious something faster is always coming. The issue I have is with the timing. Mac Studio m2 max was released on june 13, 2023. So a mere 4.5 months later, here comes m3 max. When people buy an iPhone, typically apple doesn't one-up that model for at least a year. Here, 4.5 months is really short amount of time for a chip to be replaced.
I just want that new wallpaper!!!
I just got a new MacBook Pro a few months ago, figured they’d never make another in black, and here we are.
How being unified is against the fact that it's not enough for anything except the very light office productivity. But it's unified and built into the CPU. SoC. It's not the old-world memory slotted somewhere on the motherboard.
Phone-level comparison is also somewhat of a misnomer. iPhone 15 Pro Max is more powerful than most PCs.
That's because there is little to rave about for this update.
Apple themselves during the keynote advertised it as an upgrade for mostly Intel users and maybe some M1s, they dodged most comparisons against the M2 line.
Well, I can’t change it, hence single-core performance remains important.Well that's a question to that specific build tool. Builds can be done in parallel and many do so.
I’ll take that bet. Can't wait to find out if M3 Pro is slower than M2 Pro with all the downgrades...
Not that surprising given that M3 Max is a single chip with 12 performance cores, while M2 Ultra is two M2 Max glued together for 16 performance cores, held back by the inherent bottlenecks of this solution. It only beat M2 Max by 43%, so it's very far away from linear scaling.M3 MAX is faster than M2 ULTRA

Wow, M3 Max outperforms M2 Ultra in Geekbench! While a small margin, it's funny how Mac Pro always ages poorly. 2019 Mac Pro was released less than a year before the Apple Silicon transition, and now the M2 Ultra Mac Pro is being beat by a lower end chip 4 months after release.x.com
OH MY WORD, THAT'S INCREDIBLE! A MacBook is faster than the new Mac Pro!M3 MAX is faster than M2 ULTRA

But they can use third-party gpus, while Apple can't. That drastically changes the equation..Nah, they're barely managing to catch up with M2 Max in CPU, GPU is much worse.

Phone comparison is totally fine.
Yes, Apple should clear it with previous owners first, so as to not hurt their feelings. After all, the computer they bought no longer suits their needs, once a faster machine comes along. So let me get this straight, a laptop with m3 max will be faster than a mac studio with m2 max? Seems like anyone who bought a mac studio m2 max in the past 1-2 months got taken for a ride.
Can they? They "have not ruled out" it will be a possibility. Well..But they can use third-party gpus, while Apple can't. That drastically changes the equation..
I have 8Gb Air and i definitely know it's constantly swapping RAM.Considering the work I've been doing on my M2 MacBook Air with 8 GB of RAM, I can say that stating "not enough for anything except the very light office productivity" means you do not know what you are talking about.
With these nerfings the only real benefits of Pro are the display support, not even the option for 24 vs 32 gb ram worth it.M3 vs 11 core vs 12 core M3 Pro will be a common dilemma. Each step costing about 300€ here.
Did they discontinue the MacBook Air M1?Apple can't put down M2 to prop up M3 because there are more Macs for sale during the holiday season with M2 than M3. M1 was just put out to pasture with the iMac update... so fair game for "long in tooth" comparisons because there are is no more M1 for sale as new from Apple. Intel is easier to compare because that's 2023 vs. 2020 (or older), which should yield big, interesting numbers for quick-hit marketing messaging.
It's always about the money. 💰💰💰
As much as I love iMacs, that's a major issue with them. I have some perfectly lovely iMacs with great screens that I can't really use because they are getting old (2013/2014) and can't be used as an external monitor with my Apple Silicon computers. This is why AIO’s are doomed. What we all need is a new Mini and a range of displays to pick from. No more throwing out a nice display when processor obsolete, either.
