Buy a SIM-free version of the iPhone SE from Apple directly. This will solve 90% of your issues and give you a great phone that you can use just about anywhere in the world.

The iPad cellular is $429 from Apple and has something called Apple Sim that allows the user to select whatever short term data plan in the US and abroad.

It’s cheaper to buy the iPhone SE from Amazon India than it is from a U.S. Apple Store. Apple has lowered the price in India to make iPhone SE more competitive there.

If you’re willing to spend more, the iPhone 7 is another good choice.
