Hi again. Last news...I went to the Apple Store with my 2nd iPad coming from Staples. The tech at the Apple Store admitted the screen had some kind of problem. He went to the backstore and came back with a sealed box, not a white brand new wrapped iPad box. The brown box was sealed. He opened it and there was a gold 64 iPad. He gave it to me and made me sign something on his own iPad. Now I think, I understand the trick: I'm stuck with a refurbished since the SN goes like this: F6QQF0........ Isn't that a refurbished? What should I think? I paid for a new iPad and there I am now with a refurbished one. I'm starting to feel a little angry and agressive. I think this does the thing with Apple for me. Anyhow, the screen of this iPad looks better than the two first units from Staple. It also came with iOS 8.4 which I found a little strange. I upgrade to 9.1. Should I give up or what? I have other things to care than do battle with Apple. Forgot. Staples made the replacement (2 scnd iPad) on December Friday December 11. So I am within the 15 days replacement/exchange plan.

I think it's refurbished......the serial number is too weird plus iOS 8.4...seems like a refurb from last years production line

No he didn't but because of my uncontrollable happiness when contemplating a new display, I didn't read the fine lines and I signed something on his iPad. Actually, the refurbished display is the best I've seen. The two previous ones were plain ******. But when I think I paid for a new iPad and I find myself with a refurbished one at the end...That's when I think there's something wrong here. I can't believe having a functional display on an iPad is a lottery. So this is where Apple is at now? I'll have to reevaluate my next purchase which would have been an iPhone to replace my old HTC One s from 2012 running Android 4.4.2 as my Christmas gift to myself (iPad was my birthday gift to myself). No problem. No fault. Fantastic display. Slow but reliable since day one. Anyway. Can I trust this refurbished iPad. Where do come the refurbished?

Apple also does have plenty of new replacement iPads so your device mostly likely is new so ignore my refurbished comment after careful thought, replacement may not come in original box so that's normal to have a different box.

Even so - "refurbished" does not necessarily mean "used" or "previously broken and repaired". It may also mean that someone just didn't like the iPad, and returned for refund. You don't need any reason to return within the first 14 days.
Apple doesn't care. All returns would go through a "re-certification" process, where they would be carefully tested, sent for repairs if needed, outside case parts are evaluated for defects, damage, scratches and smudges, etc. There's probably more inspection than what a new piece gets. New ones typically would just be sampled. It's one reason why new ones COULD have similar defects in the same Staples store. Defect sampling has disadvantages then. A refurbished unit is more likely to be "no defects" than one straight out of the factory.

I hear you, I will only say years back I had an issue with my original iPad and it was exchanged for a refurb (well outside return period, years after I bought it). The refurb was better than the original in nearly every way and went on to have many more years of daily use.

Count your lucky stars. Apple was under no obligationon to exchange your iPad as you didn't buy from them.

I didnt buy my ipad from apple and they still service, its the same thing with my iphone

I'm not talking about service.

I'm just saying that if you didn't buy the iPad from Apple, they are not obligated to give you an exchange.

So, not an Air 2, but on my Pro, is this an example of the book spine effect? The top edge (right in landscape) almost looks like it's in a shadow. Whites look darker along the edge. Here's a pic, tried my best to capture the effect and this is the closest I could get to what it looks like IRL. See two circles at the top where I pulled colors from left and right side of the slide over pane to highlight the difference. It's subtle, but it's kind of driving me crazy. Not sure if it's worth exchanging.

End of the saga. Period. Hello again. talked to an Apple customer service representative this afternoon. with the SN of my new iPad, she could testify it was a new unit. "I would now right away, she said. There would be infos about previous customer". I told myself: this saga has to come to an end. And it has ended after this call at Apple. I couldn't believe she (Customer Service) would blatantly lie at me for such a small matter after all. I must say though the screen is quite beautiful this time. My 2 cents on this: QC at Apple is very down, an Apple screen on iPad line or iPone is gorgeous when it's not defective but as it has been said, good luck with the screen lottery. And I find this to be very serious even if it's not a pain to do business with the geniuses at the Apple Store. I remember of so much better Apple times. Thank you all very much for your precious help, hints and caring. Great support from this community.

Hello again and thanks so much for all your input. Staples gave me a replacement and...same thing. The dreaded bookspine effect. I'm wondering if Staples had a bad shipment from Apple. If so, there's no point to ask for another replacement. What are my options? I'm very disappointed cause I wanted so much an iPad and it's my first ever. Never encountered this kind of problem with my 2 Samsung Tab 3 and 4. Could it be a poor QC at Apple? What shall i do? There's a part of me who wants an iPad and another who doesn't want to cope with a defect from a 600$+ slate (I'm in Canada and yes this is the price Apple Canada sells iPads). Should I continue with Staples or take my issue to Apple. bevsb2, the picture doesn't do justice to my first iPad, it looks more terrible than it is. The second one is probably like yours and you have decide to keep it. My best issue?
Thanks again
the same effect ? Identical ?

It's up to you to accept a refurbished or not. They usually are better checked than normal production units .

There is no lottery, but defective units exist since they are manufacturing millions.

Hi Max(IT), I understand what you're saying. My words may be harsh towards Apple but I wanted an iPad for so long and the day I make my move, boom, one defective unit, then boom again another defective unit from the same store. Had to turn to the Apple Store in order to have a non-defective unit. Gets on your nerves, takes a lot of your own time, a lot of discussion and you are nerveux and disappointed. But hey, my third iPad turns out to be a wonder. So i'm a happy customer…Vive la vie. La vie est belle!

Not sure this is an option, but if there is another Staples in your area I would give them a try. I myself has an issue with an iPad I bought from Staples and returned it at a different store. That cured my problem. Good luck

Good for you. You got a keeper. :D Enjoy!

I do wonder why so many bad screens from apple, of late...I find it odd that some (including my original A2) passed QC unchecked? Mine was bad and clearly noticeable to the first applestore staff member i showed it to.

Colours were beautiful on my ipad...until i viewed anything on a white background then it became Eeww :(

I see many on here with varying degrees of similar issues and wondering if the laminating procedure on the A2 and IPP could be having an effect on screen uniformity?

Yeah, screens are hit and miss. I think it's LCD technology in general. I exchanged a few iPad 3s a couple of years ago and finally just gave up and went with and iPad 2. The screens I had showed either yellow blotches or a red to green tint from one side to the other. Very noticeable when reading a book.

However, I finally upgraded this week to an iPad Air 2 and the one I got has a perfect screen. I seriously can't find anything wrong with it at all. It had iOS 8.4 on it out of the box so I figured it was from a batch made sometime in the summer.

I can understand your feeling, and I'm happy you got a keeper lately.

Thats amazing battery but i would guess thats "battery usage" time as oposed to "screen On" time

17-20 hrs on an air 2 will only happen when there is mix of screen on time and background activity while screen is off, background streaming ie, radio, spotify, music player etc..count as battery usage

I have absolutely no doubt that the air2 can max 10 or 11 hours (Screen On Time) but 20 hours (SOT) is never gonna happen on air2. And We've had a few.

There was once where i saw 13.5 hours and thought Wow! But when i checked under 'settings, battery' it appeared that Spotify and podcast had been backgrounding for around 4-5 hours with screen off.

My ipad will likely, happily play tunes for a full day or even two..When the screen is off but if the screen is On during such playback then we will see "Normal" battery life resume (9-11hrs)

I think when measuring battery, to save confusion life the rule of thumb is measure Screen On Time which is different to 'in usage' time
