First ever MacBook Pro

So I have bought my first ever MacBook Pro due to be delivered on the 2nd, I’ve only ever had a Mac Mini and iMac and Windows laptops.

However after many months of swaying between changing to an Android/Windows setup or all Apple setup I have purchased a MacBook, main reason for this being the quad core in the 13”

However I am not sure if I should get AppleCare for it, what are the benefits of it? I’ve never had any issues with the desktop Macs I have not the previous windows laptops. Nor have I ever had AppleCare for any of my other Apple products.

I’ve always said it’s best to get it. You never know when it might be needed! You can buy it at any point during the 12 month manufacturers warranty I believe, and it extends that warranty for another 3 years.

If it's a 2017 non-touchbar 13", I'd say that you probably don't need AppleCare because the most failure-prone part -- the keyboard -- now comes with a 4-year replacement policy from Apple (from date of original sale). That's LONGER THAN AppleCare.

If it's a 2018 touchbar model, you might consider AppleCare. These ARE NOT covered by the 4-year keyboard warranty as above. At least... not yet.

Hmmm... do the quad-cores come ONLY in touchbar models? (can't remember)

Always get Applecare. I normally don't buy extended warranties; however, when I bought my mid 2017 13 inch Macbook pro, I bought it. Search the forums and you will read the stories of those who need something replace (logic boards, etc) and didn't have Applecare. That alone will convince you to get it as it definitely cost more than Applecare to get it replace as it definitely cost more than Applecare to get it replaced.

My Macbook Pro is still runs flawless today. However, knowing that I have Applecare in case something happens, makes it somewhat more enjoyable to use as I know i'm protected in case something happens.

I always get AppleCare+ when the product is expensive. I used to not get AppleCare+ on my iPads cuz I'd pick them up at BestBuy when they were on sale for $250, but even now, I'll pop it on those just in case. Little bit of peace of mind.

The Pro? It adds 2 YEARS to the 1 year warranty and gives you the ability to replace things that would otherwise cost a lot for very little. Like Wreckus said - I can enjoy using my MacBook Pro a little more without having to baby it as much. And I usually don't get extended warranties either.

Congrats on your MBP! This is my first MBP too. I got mine 2 months ago.

As others have mentioned, its always best to get AppleCare just to be on the safe side incase something does happen. I had a 2008 Unibody MBP that had a failing screen about 3 months from my AppleCare expiration. If I had not had that I would have paid something like $500 USD to get that repaired.

I would also like to note that Apple is now offering two types of coverage, either AppleCare+ or AppleCare.
AppleCare+ covers manufacturer defects and 2 accidental damage claims and MUST be purchased within 60 days of your MBP purchase. AppleCare only covers manufacturer defects and can be purchased within the 12 month period.

I know this because I bought a 2016 MBP on release day and I waited 3 months go get AppleCare and I was told by both in store employees and Phone support that I was only eligible for plain old AppleCare and note AppleCare+

I'm not sure they do applecare+ in UK/Europe for laptops, just regular still. And consumer law coverage covers most regular warranty issues that applecare might here for just as long. ( upto 5 years in scotland )

Ya true I don't know about international rules. But in the US it's def a good idea.

Count me in the "never buy extended warranty" camp--expect for AppleCare+. One of our cats barfed on my husband's ThinkPad--goodbye ThinkPad. I think it is well worth the piece of mind.

It's not really worth it in the UK as it doesn't cover accidental damage. Your home insurance may already cover that while consumer law will cover it for manufacturer's defects for 6 years.

Your desktop Macs sat on a desk, with limited mobility, the chances of an accidental damage was minimal. With a Laptop, your risks increase. I buy AppleCare + for numerous reasons. Accidental damage right off the bat for a mobile unit is essential. But that additional extended coverage is handy just for the display or logic board. If anything happens to those after the warranty, that gets really expensive.

On the flip side, if you decide to sell your MacBook Pro a couple years down the line, AppleCare + increases the resale value. Buyers are more likely to purchase an older device with coverage then without.

And as noted earlier in thread, the buyer appears to be in Scotland, where AppleCare+ is not an option, only regular, so the potential benefits are far less clear cut.

You are better off getting a personal items policy through your home or auto insurance company. I have a personal policy for $4000 worth of coverage that takes care of my drone, cell phone and new 2018 MBP. If any or all of those items get stolen or break for whatever reason I am reimbursed 100% of the value with 0 deductible. My cost is only $250 a year for this. The yearly cost goes down based on how much coverage you need. When I only had the drone on there and $1200 worth of coverage it only cost me like $70 a year. Way better option than apple care which will not cover theft or loss.
