iPad First Generation iPad: Using it in 2026

Anybody else using the first generation iPad?

I got mine out of storage, jailbroke it, and have Mail, calendar and some other things working and syncing with iCloud. Wifi on latest Modem works. Using iCab for a browser.

Still have 5.1.1 on one, mostly use it for podcasts that still download and for reading.

The probability of people using it nowadays is really low. The last time I saw someone using it on the internet is a few people on X who have managed to put the latest iOS 7 onto it ( which it’s actually not so bad in performance on it despite its 256MB of RAM) but the main reason why that possible because the A4 does support iOS 7 via the iPhone 4.

If Apple let it have iOS 7 it would have had been a decent iPad but the fact that the 3GS released months before the iPad and was still supported after this iPad didn’t get iOS 6.

This iPad is number 1 when it comes to never buying a OG Apple Product. The Apple TV HD has lived through every single iPad model to date from tvOS 9- tvOS 26 but not this iPad ( fun fact)

And yes I love that the 3GS is sooo much better than this iPad

This iPad is the third worst iPad in existence after the iPad 3/iPad Mini 3

Not the 1st generation, but I have a 2nd gen iPad that we use for playing movies. Amazingly, the battery is still going strong with multiple hours of battery life per charge. With Movies Anywhere linked to our iTunes account, there are plenty of movies that we can watch on the device. It's really great for when kids are sick with a stomach bug--set it up and let them watch movies, and you can just quarantine the ancient iPad afterward to avoid spreading germs to other family members!

The iPad 2nd gen really isn't good for much else--too slow, too many apps don't work, no real reason to use it for anything other than media consumption.

I used to have several of these. I continued to use them as media players for some time but as newer iPads of mine became obsolete I replaced them. One of them was even still on iOS 4 after years. I find it very difficult to go back to an iOS device without a Retina screen these days, it's incredibly rough. There's something about iOS fonts that magnifies the issue compared to a low-PPI desktop, I think. I don't notice it on a 1080p/1440 monitor to the same extent.

If we are speaking of these old devices though I do still have an iPhone 3GS that was never once updated from iPhone OS 3, that thing I used to love. Even after the 4 was out I still used that as a secondary phone/iPod and it saw many years of good service. Still have it as well but the buttons all fell off.
