It's a very nice piece of electronics, but since there was a time when I was using a MBA as main computer, I would miss the following:

- charging
- connecting an exernal monitor
- connecting an external USB-3 HDD
- connecting an external WIRED keyboard

in the same time.

Even if you buy Apple's bluetooth keyboard, which by the way DOESNT HAVE numerical keypad, how would you turn the new MBA into a workstation once home? :(

My 2c...

So let's get this straight - people are complaining about the lack of things this new MacBook has - mainly ports - which is exactly the point - it purposely has minimal ports because it is an ultra portable computer.

If you want a computer with more ports you can buy one - MacBook Air, MacBook Pro etc.

If you buy a Smart Car do you expect it to come with a roof rack to hold your family's bikes and camping gear? No you get a station wagon or an SUV.

Again, more ridiculous comments about a product that was designed for a specific purpose.

One port for everything is insulting. Seriously, they were so focused on keeping it so thin as possible, yet they require you to buy ridiculously expensive adapters to carry around with you, defeating its whole "small and light" purpose.

Basically, this is for people who will never plug anything into it other than power. In other words. . .its a netbook.

Just to pick up your example of the Smart Car:

I would expect it to have at least two doors. With this one port it is like creating a car with one door. What's the problem? If a passenger wants to get in, the driver simply has to get out first, then the passenger can get in....

No, they are not. The USB-C standard calls for 10Gbps of throughput. Apple's implementation on the new Macbook has only 5.1Gbps. Until that solitary port on the new Macbook is capable of 10Gbps of throughput, it is non-standard.

There really isn't enough known about what's going on here to say one way or another what's going on. First, they specify it at 5gbps, not 5.1gbps. One way of looking at that is that they are referencing the displayport 1.2 standard.

https://thewere42.wordpress.com/2015/02/24/displayport-gets-4k-video-via-usb-type-c/
Early implementations of DisplayPort Alt Mode USB Type-C devices will likely use existing DisplayPort 1.2a capabilities that support up to 5.4Gbps per lane. Using 5.4Gbps across all four high-speed lanes will support up to 4K (4096 x 2160) display resolutions at a 60Hz frame rate with up to 30-bit color.

In any case, this has to be an officially compatible usb-port because that's part of the rules of using the usb design and name.

There is no point in trying to scare people into thinking that Apple is doing something non-standard here.

11" Air also does't have a card reader, so not really surprised about this one.
I think at this point Mba or rmbp is the best product if you want mac and xps 13 if you want windows.

I am glad I got used mba 13 core i7 8gb ram for 900 dollars last month instead of waiting

Just another thought:

I was hoping for the new Macbook to have a SIM card slot to add 3G/4G capability. Well tough luck, did not happen. But now it is not even possible to use a 3G/4G dongle for crying out loud due to the missing USB port.

Looking forward to the improved version next year :) Maybe history is repeating itself when Apple improved the rather useless first Air version and then made a marvellous product out of it.

Yes it seems next iteration will be better with 2 usb c ports

Fully agree, and I am happy to see that the refurb price of the MBA 11" has dropped a bit (in HK) :)

Yes just saw headphone port in audio section still no micro sd slot

Apples obsession with thinnest are giving us inferior products with bendable features

I really don't get how it can be made any more clear. If having a ton of ports built in to your device is a requirement for you, choose something else. Nobody is compelling you to buy this laptop. It has been expressly designed to be as light as possible. The choice of the Core-M chip reinforces this design intent. This is a laptop for people who want something like the iPad Air in a laptop form. The Core-M is barely more than a tablet chip. You are doing the equivalent of complaining that a Miata isn't going to fit your family and dog when you go on vacation when every manufacturer is also willing to sell you a minivan.

The reality is, that for people who value portability, it makes a LOT more sense to leave the ports out of the computer (which has allowed them to shave ~30% off the weight of other competitive ultralight laptops) and instead of carrying an extra half of pound around 100% of the time, instead you carry a 1oz adapter tucked away in your bag for those occasions when those ports are needed.

If this is targetted for ipad people then it should have a price of 900 dollars not 1300 dollars.1300 dollars should get a practical product

Oh, get real. This has everything an iPad has, plus a more powerful processor, plus 4x more ram and at least double the storage of the largest iPad. Oh, plus a real keyboard and trackpad. Note that aftermarket keyboards for the iPad that are complete pieces of junk generally run about $80. The best ones, which are still only a shadow of the quality of Apple OEM run up to $200. This is priced exactly where it should be.

Oh, Apple releases a laptop with less ports. Conclusion, all laptops of Apple will loose the same ports. Because Apple will shrink down their line of laptops, as they have done by going down from two lines in 1999 to such a low number of three lines in 2015. In between they even dropped to two lines only.

You mean how they phased out optical drives across their entire range. Then stopped you upgrading storage. Then soldered RAM onto the logic boards. They have previous in phasing out features across the board.

This is the consequence of an Ipad Air married with a Macbook Air. LOL :D

I personally carry an Ipad Air with a Moshi keyboard cover. The weight on both is already at 1 pound and 14.5 ounce (866 grams). So a new Macbook 12 weighted at 2.03 pounds (920 grams) is nearly as light in weight.

My wallet will be getting lighter as well once I bought mine on April 10th however.

Excellent point. This laptop is ultra cool for the large majority of laptop users out there (students; business travelers; parents who use Mail, Safari, iPhoto, FaceTime, etc; physicians who carry around their laptop all day and use it to connect to an EMR server....). Who actually needs to plug into power, multiple external drives, external monitors and a projector simultaneously? I would say that's about 1% of Mac notebook users (and that's being generous), or VERY OCCASIONALLY notebook users like myself who find themselves in situations like that about 0.001% of the time. If you're a professional video editor who uses Final Cut Pro every day, or if you're a hard core gamer, or if you're an app developer, then what the hell are you even thinking about here? Would you really even WANT this computer in the first place?

This is like a sports car enthusiast complaining about Chevrolet's new Aveo not having enough horsepower. Um, excuse me, but that car is not really the Chevrolet for you. They make something called a Camaro, or for those with more cash, a Corvette (or a Corvette Z06 if you have uber-cash). But, if you're commenting on the Aveo, then you really don't even understand what you're looking for, do you? Sorry if you're simply too CHEAP to shell out the $$$ for the MacBook Pro, but don't expect to buy an economy computer and then complain that it doesn't have all the bells and whistles. Wow...pretty unbelievable.

1.1ghz

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...breath...hahHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

GHz is misleading. It's faster than an i5-540M, which itself is still well more than capable for all everyday tasks that the average person does.

There are lots of things I don't like about this laptop, but the CPU is not one of them.

It's striking to see how difficult it is for some people to imagine a typical use-case for the new 12" MacBook. Most people use their portable computer for simple writing and connectivity - - who wouldn't want a 2 lb beauty for this situation if money wasn't an issue? And if you're a power user... well there's good news! Apple has not discontinued the MBP, but instead upgraded it.

RIP MagSafe.

They couldn't f*&^*&^&%*^%*% leave a power adapter + one port?

I miss my 12" PB :p

Edit: Wait, you have to pay $79+ to plug in everything????

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MJ1K2AM/A/usb-c-digital-av-multiport-adapter

To understand Apple's choice of the USB-C port, you only have to look at the amount of space available on the new 12" MacBook for a standard 3.5mm headphone jack...
