I thought i would post my experience about switching from the first gen Retina MacBook Pro to a smaller 13'' Macbook Pro with Touchbar. Maybe someone else is thinking about doing the same.

I have been waiting to get a 13'' for a long time, because the 15'' always seemed a bit too big for me. I use it on the couch alot and it's mostly sitting on my lap. And 15'' is just a bit too big and heavy to use comfortably after a while.
Back when the first Retina Macbook was released, there was no 13'' offering. But the screen looked so great, that i just had to get it.

So i have been waiting for a 13'' with quad core all this time and now Apple finally delivered one after six years. (Or should i say Intel)

Things i noticed so far:

Weight
When i took out the new device for the first time it seemed heavier than expected. It's
3.02 pounds (1.37 kg) according to the specs and my old MBPR was 4.46 pounds (2.02 kg). But somehow it still didn't feel much lighter to me. But after using it for a while on my lap i can feel that it is indeed lighter and takes much longer to get uncomfortable. It's also easier to use on one leg.

Touchbar
The first thing i noticed about the Touchbar was that it needs a higher resolution. It's okay, but could be better looking. Besides that i like it so far. Have not missed the old Keys yet. But need more time to decide. But TouchID works very well and fast. I like.

Sound
The speakers are SOOOOOO much better than the ones in the old MBPR. It's crazy! From what i read they improved them in the 2018 models even more, so i guess i skipped a generation or two. And it "shows". Although i always felt like the speakers on my old MBPR got worse over time and also got quieter. Not sure if that's true, but the past few years i felt like they could be louder. I don't think i have ever heard speakers this good in any laptop. Especially at this size.

Screen
I'm using the same 1440 by 900 resolution as i did on the old 15'' model. That way i'm not loosing any working surface. So far it seems to look great, even though it is a scaled resolution. Scaled resolutions didn't look as good on the old 15'', so they definitely improved something there.
The colors feel more vivid on the new device. Image quality really looks great. Didn't find any lightbleed or dead pixels on my device. And i love Truetone. Finally it's no longer awkward to switch from my iPhone with TrueTone enabled to the MacBook. This always bothered me.
So far i'm not missing the bigger screen.

Battery
I managed to drain the battery pretty fast. Can't really tell you excact numbers, but it went down to 20% in what felt like 4-5 hours. But i was installing and synchronising alot of things, so i guess it is to be expected. Will have to see how it is in normal use. Engadget got like 12h out of it in their testing.

Trackpad
The "new" Forcetouch Trackpad feels great to use. I love the new size and how you can click in every corner without problems. The only thing i don't like is the sound it makes. It sounds tinny and a bit cheap to me, compared to the real click sound the old MBPR makes. Even though it got worn out and a bit loud after all 6 years.

Keyboard
The keyboard feels good to me. I can write pretty fast, because you don't need to push them down very far. I think i will get used to it in no time. Only the sound of the keys is a bit weird. I feel like not all of them sound the same, which will take some getting used to.

Charging and Ports
I actually don't miss MagSafe that much at the moment. Using it on my Lap, it often pushed the MagSafe slightly out and it stopped charging. Or it got out, when i just moved it around a bit. This is not happening anymore. And the charger was always on the wrong side for me. Now i can charge it on both sides. (And luckily all of the ports seem to work on mine.) But maybe i will change my mind once i trip over the cable and destroy this expensive device ;)
I don't use alot of external devices, so i'm fine with only USB-C ports. I just got an adapter for my Superdrive and it still seems to work.

Heat
Even while setting everything up the temperature was always still comfortable to the touch. I was using it on my Lap after all and it never got too hot. This is a big improvement to my old MBPR, which i often had to put aside or sometimes put a pillow inbetween.

Fans
I rarely hear them. The system needs to be under heavy load for them to get loud. Even under full load, they are not very loud or annoying.
I got a Dell Latitude 7390 2-1 (13'') at work and it is also Quadcore, but with a TDP of 15W. The slightest load will speed up the fans and they sound very annoying. Under full load it's really bad. So i'm very happy that my Macbook does not sound like that.

And it's also quieter than my old 15'' Macbook. But it rarely bothered me there.

Hey Siri
Hey Siri works and hears me like 95% of the time. But Siri is still useless to me. She only seems to understand what i want from here, when i ask here in a predefined way and i always have to look up how to ask her... Maybe it would work better in english, but in german it's not working well.

Specs:
13'' / 16GB / 512GB / i5
15'' / 8GB / 256GB / i7

Anyway... sorry for wasting your time :)

i just made the same exact upgrade. i was actually impressed by how long my 2012 MBP lasted, and hoping that the new one will last just as long (if not longer)

at first i was concerned that the computer would feel too small, but because the 13" scales to the same equivalent resolution as the 15", i didn't lose any screen real estate, and i got used to it really quickly.
Even though i've seen the 13" in an Apple store, when i opened it at home and actually use it on my lap, it feels way more portable. i used to dread whenever i had to take my 15" on the go because of the size and weight. it barely fit in my messenger bag, so that's part of the reason why i made the switch to 13". i don't regret the decision to change the size at all.

Preferformance wise...i'm not a heavy gamer or anything (got PS4 for that) and for general day to day task, the specs in the 13" is more than enough so didn't see the need for dedicated graphics. worst case scenario i can always get an EGPU down the road. overall, the 8th generation processor feels way snappier, and with the vastly improved SSD performance, apps load up way quicker. The computer does get a little bit warm at times under heavy load but my old 2012 MBP used to get HOT.

in terms of the switch to the butterfly keyboard, i actually bought a keyboard protector which dampens the typing a little bit as well. overall the keys feels extremely responsive, and i feel like i can type faster than my old chiclet style keyboard. the Touch Bar does need some time to get used to but it does add some flexibility to day to day use.

Would totally recommend the upgrade for anyone on the fence!

I still own a 2012 15" Retina, but i7 2.6/512gb/gt650m and just bought a 2018 15" i7 2.6/512gb/560x. 13" is a bit small for me to work on, as I already have a 2016 12" macbook justo to carry it around.
It totally depends on your needs.

Thanks for including that note in your assessment. I loathe the mid-2012's speakers and since I've had two of these machines I know it's not just a fluke. At first I thought I'd experienced an otherwise unrecognized hearing loss but a couple of my kin said no way, that's not what it's about. Anyway those speakers were why I ever bothered with a little bluetooth speaker, so I don't have to wear earbuds for the duration of watching a movie.

Still trying to decide between a Macbook and an MBP for my next laptop but i know one thing, I'll be dropping into an Apple retail store to check out the speakers before I buy, no matter if I end up waiting and buying an Apple refurb later on, my usual choice. I had been used to reading the specs on a laptop and making up my mind on that basis before making my purchase. I've been cured of that approach.

Can I ask if you are older. I am and worry that the font will be too small on the smaller screen for my agign eyes if I go from the 15" to the 13". I find the "best for retina" on my 2015 15" is just about perfect for me.

I'm older and I find the 13" laptop too small. I'm much happier with the 15"

I'm 32 and my eyes still very good.

I think it is best if you go into a store and play around with different screen resolutions to see if it can work for you. :)

I greatly prefer the physical size of the 15 inch screen and the ease of readability that offers while still maintaining a large canvas.

That said, I am also somebody who would get a 17 inch MacBook Pro if they offered one as I tend to use it as my only Mac and mostly at home just moving it around and I would love to have even more screen size for my usage.

Thanks. My eyes were good until my late 30s. Then I noticed I could not see up close as well (age based presbyopia).

Now I have reading glasses stashed throughout my house and special glasses for working on the computer that are set to give focus at arms length to 30 inches. Still they only work so well. Anything at 8 pt font or below is a struggle

Small update, since i did a stress test yesterday to to see if the Fix from Apple worked. (it did)

A tip, use a program like Quickres (there are free options) to set whatever resolution you like. I am running my 13" at 2048x1280 without any problem and that is giving me a lot of screen real estate. If I need to have a lot on the screen at once I can bump it up to native (2560x1600) but if I am reading text for long periods of time at further distances from the screen that resolution does strain my eyes a bit.

I'm waiting for mine to ship, same spec (13"/i5/16GB/512GB), only I'm upgrading from an early 2015 12" MacBook. The waiting is killing me! Glad you're enjoying it.

I know the feeling, I was so anxious to get my laptop, and I'm also another happy camper, though the throttling issue has me a bit disappointed.

Has the new updated fixed throttling for you?
My MBP is faster, but the temps are just as high. Before the patch, Cinebench was pulling in a 920, after the patch 1018. In both cases the temps shoot up to 100 very quickly.

I'd prefer a cooler Mac then a blazingly (keyword blaze :p ) fast Mac. I'm using Volta that limits the wattage which in turn keeps my MBP cooler
