Night Shift was introduced in iOS 9.3 on 3/21/2016, so from there you can determine the available iPads at the time that could run iOS 9.3.

thank you, but, I have an iPad 3rd generation running 9.3.5 and no night shift feature. At least none that I can locate.
If you type Night Shift into the Settings search, it doesn't come up? It's under Display & Brightness.
no it isn’t.
Turns out night shift is only supported on 64 bit architecture Chip and the first one on the iPad is the iPad Air. So that’s the reason why.
