This is my first iPad (an 11” pro that I won in a work contest). I had wanted to use it as a tablet, and enjoy the feel and experience when using it that way. However, I purchased a MKB to try out, and find that using the MKB is so seamless and enjoyable that I don’t really use the iPad unless it’s with with the MKB. Given that I only use my MBP for web, word, Spotify and photos, the iPad Pro will be replacing the laptop. It’s a shame to think I’m not really getting the tablet experience, but this whole new laptop type experience is pretty awesome.

Anybody else stumble into this conundrum?

The great thing is - you have the option to use it as a tablet! I love the MKB and it is tough to explain to pepole how much more productive the iPad is with it.

My IPP is used so much, I can use it for most of the day for work (on the MKB) the kids come in from school and then use it for gaming (tablet) and content (MKB), I will then use it the rest of the evening - content (on and off MKB), as a second screen (MKB). Literally in use the whole day.

The MKB is not just for lots of typing but also a stand, I know that sounds obvious and maybe a very expensive stand but it’s a small foot print so lends it’s self to staying attached - second screen to my pc (while gaming) or in the kitchen for recipes, one of my kids even uses it for filming himself for Youtube.

When done it closes and is a screen protector…. amazing device the MKB.

As much as I love my MK for my 2021 iPad Pro 12.9", I found I actually enjoy using it as simply a tablet (sans keyboard). I recently had this "retro" experience when I was too lazy to get off the coach and attach the MK. I've been so enamored with the MK, I forgot how nice it was to simply use Safari in tablet mode.

Don't get me wrong, when I need to type anything over a few words, the MK is the way to go!

The case point can’t be understated. Using the IPP in bed with the MKB vs the smart folio is like night and day as far as stability.

Does your Magic Keyboard allow you to use it as a tablet by detaching it, then placing the iPad on top of it? <- Or would this damage the Magic Keyboard?

It seems the Magic Keyboard doesn't "close flat" without the iPad in the case (judging from the video, I haven't seen it in person).

Thanks Kyle76! :)

It actually closes pretty flat, with a slight crease, and you could definitely rest the tablet on top of it. I can’t see how that could damage anything, but I’m not sure what it accomplishes other than saving space by stacking them. If you turned it over so the keyboard was facing down, that side is a solid, flat piece.

I'm kind of the opposite: while I enjoy FaceID and Pencil 2, I have felt from the beginning that the change to the flat back full of magnets design was a step backward for anyone who isn't buying the iPad Pro as a typing productivity device. My main issue is that, without magnets in the spine like the "classic" iPad, cases now have to be folios (or the similar case + cover, sometimes bonded together), and the folios are made even heavier by having to have metal plates in them to work with the magnets in the iPad.

I never felt much need to protect the back of my iPads, so I LOVED the Smart Cover from day one, and still do. It protects the screen and, when folded on itself, gives a thicker, more pleasant grip on one side for holding the iPad while reading. With the iPad Pro, the Smart Folio is quite heavy, leading to an iPad Pro/Air + Folio weighing ~50% more than a 10.2" iPad with Smart Cover, and you can absolutely feel the difference in use. Take the 11" Pro out of the folio and the weight becomes more manageable, but it's no longer that comfortable to hold. I've found that the two part case + covers, while lighter, add a bit too much thickness and enlarge the overall footprint, while never feeling as good in the hand as I'd like.

I'm hoping that the rumored Air-style iPad mini 6 will end up being the best mix of size and features of any iPad for me, as it should be a manageable weight even with a folio case, but I fear that it will feel too small for some of the reading I do (ie, comics or magazine-size PDFs). If that turns out to be the case, I'll be hoping for a future consumer iPad styled like the Air, but with magnets in the spine instead of back to make the Smart Cover still viable.
