The GPS might work, but the maps won't. The iPhone OS doesn't have all of google maps' map data on the device. One of the issues with "turn by turn" is when you're out of network, you get a nice blue dot in the middle of a tan/gray screen.

yes this should be obvious.
I never said maps would work without a data connection or a locally stored database.

I said that GPS positioning would work.

Mine was shipped Fed Ex, after lunch I came back and WHOA on my desk was the Package! A day early w000000000t!

To the lucky ones that got their 3G iPads, a question that's somehow hard to try: I live in Italy but I can have a friend in the US that could buy me a 3G iPad and bring it overseas, where I'd like to use with an italian carrier's microSIM.
Since we all know it's factory unlocked, but some guy at US Apple's customer service told him US iPads are locked to AT&T, I need someone to check it out, maybe cutting down a normal SIM by some other US carrier.

Is that doable for any of you? In the name of science ;)

Steve J said in the iPad announcement that the iPads are unlocked — it seems unlikely that he would have been incorrect.

3G iPad Has Arrived

I'm a university instructor in Central Missouri, and one of my students, who ordered her 3G iPad early, received her kit several weeks ago and her 3G iPad today. She brought it to our afternoon class. No, I don't have pics, and no, I don't know when exactly she ordered it, but I HAVE seen it, and it DID arrive early.

Let the nay-saying commence,

wmt

P.S. She didn't even know it was unusual or wasn't supposed to show up until tomorrow and I was freaking out.

Damn! Mine will be arriving tomorrow.

Ordered the 3G 32GB model. I'm developing the user interface for an iPad app, so I've been playing with my office's iPad (non-3G) since launch. Can't wait!

Finally, now someone will be able to confirm whether the black plastic stripe is a nuclear particle accelerator or not. If not, I'm not buying it.

Wrong, it's a Flux Capacitor with a matrix accelerometer based on newtonian principle of tablet function.

I wonderz if an UPS guy went to that bar, got drunken hard and left a iPad 3G on his stool. Wow, that must be Robert Chen owning that iPad in an picture.

Isn't that better than leaving a stool on your iPad.

Wonder if Apple will open a criminal investigation, have the authorities go to the person of interest's house and seize all of their electronic equipment?

Would not put this past them; they must control the flow of information. They might even track down the person at FedEx that allowed this travesty to occur and begin legal proceedings against them.
