Overall the 3g iphone is still great and all, but it would have been nice if it could have been thinned down a little bit (in reality, not just in marketing lies) using a whole year worth of new technology.
A year's worth of new technology doesn't change physics. It's amazing they got it in such a tight package to begin with--given the larger 3G radio and the addition of GPS. There's no way that would have fit in the first iPhone.

The disparaging of the "thinner at the edges" part is silly. Sometimes in order to make the device slimmer on average, you have to create a thicker lump in some portion to compensate for volume lost elsewhere. Apparently some brains just can't wrap around the geometry of a non-rectangular form and can't help but fixate on the maximum points.

Maybe "thinner" isn't a great term to use, but it sounds better than "less volume!" when you're trying to sell something, especially one where people might confuse 'volume' (volume) with 'volume' (loudness).

Just to clarify: I wasn't actually trying to say they should change the laws of physics, I was saying that over time advances in technology tend to lead electronic devices to get smaller, so I had hoped this one might too. It turns out the iPhone appears to have introduced a few new larger parts, and kept everything else nearly the same, with the end result being a slightly bigger phone.

I'm fine with the curved shape, but calling it thinner is misleading and untrue. Is the actual volume really less? Do we know that for sure? I sort of doubt it (and am not going to dip two iphones in water to check their displacement myself!).

I think that I, like a lot of people, had my hopes up for another hugely groundbreaking release this year (the original iphone compared to all other phones), and what we got is just a modest improvement (vs. the original iphone), which is fine.

Hey I just visited my local at&t store and they told me the iphone 3g was blocked for purchase unless you are eligible for the upgrade or new customer. Can anyone confirm this for their local store?

If you are ineligible for an upgrade, they'll charge you $399 instead of $199 for a 8gig iPhone.

Never Fear

I am a current AT&T customer without an iPhone. We called our local Apple Store and were told that they would probably not be able to help us--their information has been changing by the minute, but to go to an AT&T corporate store (not a franchise.) Called AT&T to confirm this and were told that we would be able to get an iPhone tomorrow for the 399/499 pricing. The rep also gave us the locations of corporate stores in our area.

Was the store you visited a corporate store or a franchise?

That's fairly amusing that someone flew to Australia to take apart a phone.
Please please please tell me you're joking.

New Zealand is not in Australia. That's like me saying 'I love Vancouver - it's the best city in the USA'.

They have seasons in New Zealand? I thought it was nice and breezy like Hawaii.

While NZ looks little and isolated, it's bigger than the UK. But it is isolated.

GEOGRAPHY LESSON OVER.

I was under the impression it was always hot, so i flew there in shorts and t-shirt and froze my ass off when I arrived. brrrrrrrr was not expecting that.

Hahah, yeah, I lived in Britain for three years and was amazed by how many Brits thought that New Zealand was just the same as Australia - hot, with deserts, etc. To put it into perspective, NZ is the same distance to Australia as England is to Russia. Does that help?

But back on topic. The disassembly didn't look too bad - I think he'll be able to put the phone back together again without any problems. Otherwise if he carries on a bag full of electrical parts onto an aeroplane, they might get a little suspicious during the x-rays hahaha.

it's just a phone with other functions. people who are crazy about the iPhone need to get a life.

maybe someday i will get one too. i don't see the point right now. half the price, twice much faster, but then you pay more for the plan. it's the same as before.

Even with the first iPhone people have slagged it off- the N95 does more; is more advanced. Blackberry's have push email and are supported by my IT department etc., Which to a fair degree is correct, however people forget that no other mobile in history has had so much hype surrounding its launch- and that's just the first model a year ago! It may not have the best camera, do MMS, drag and drop or whatever else people want but it has still set the benchmark for ease of use and simply that 'it just works'

With the coming 3G iPhone and App store Apple is going to show industry veterans exactly how the marriage of hardware and software integration is what makes a platform excel.

You can argue that you can install 3rd party programmes on Window's powered smart phones but I guarantee that Apple's method is going to be looked upon with envy. Today I downloaded 50 free apps for my iPod touch- quickly, easily and without spending hours trawling the net for the sources. I can only imagine that this number will sky-rocket in the coming weeks/months

I totally agree with you.

With the advent of the iTunes Store, Apple has created a window into peoples' wallets. The App Store is an example of this.

They could probably sell some kind of digital toilet paper right now, and as long as it connected to the iTunes Store, people would buy it.

then if the last thing is true, you are MAD and have completely lost the plot. In any case, who F-------G cares??? The point is that Apple has once again pushed the envelope to breaking point. I guess, stunning initiative and achievement doesn't mean much any more.... it makes me sad to see how people no longer can get excited about great advances and thrive on the nit-picking of the irrelevant. Once upon a time credit was given and laurels awarded to superb achievements--- now you could deliver God and the majority would yawn!!!! Or so it seems---

Pushing the envelope to the breaking point? Really? Stunning achievement?

I think you are confused; those are things apple did last year. This year they gave the envelope a modest nudge. I guess some people would rave about basically anything as long as it has their worshiped :apple: logo on it.........

Its not hard to see why thicker can be perceived as thinner to some people.
