I'll be interested to see comparisons between the iPhone 4 5-mp and the Evo 4G 8-mp camera. From my rather limited understanding of cameras, more mega pixals doesn't necessarily mean better pictures.

Can anybody who knows a decent amount about cameras guess if there will be a difference and say why?

There's lots of variables and too many unknowns currently to accurately compare. Factors include:

1. Sensor type
2. Sensor size
3. Optical quality of the lens
4. In-camera processing algorithms

MP count affects how large you can print or display images on your screen. It also affords you a greater margin for cropping.

All other things being equal it does not have any impact on the quality of the image being produced.

EVO has a horrible camera/camcorder, iPhone 4 will beat it easily.

If you want some real hard competition compare it to Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. HTC have just terrible cameras.

It looks better than the EVO 4G 8M camera.

That camera is ridiculous noisy and not that good at all. The 3M iphone camera at times beat it.

All photographers know this: its about Megapixels, it's all about light.

i wonder of the photos are from the final version of the iphone or just an prototype

Steve claimed the photos weren't retouched. The one with the man with sunglasses has been edited: the rayban logo has been (sloppily) smeared out.

damn you have some share eyes :)

i totally missed that one

Check out some pics this guy took?? Horrible and noisy?? I think not...

EVO 4g camera is backlight illumniated also... with the ablity to go 720p @60fps... its not slouch

Video camera issues are software related, they will get solved one way or another.

Those pictures aren't that great. Maybe sloppy jpg compression but there's virtually no point for the images being at 8mp at all.

So I guess people will be using the video function just so you can use the flash as a flashlight. As you can turn on the led flash for video.

didnt you know DSLR stands for - iPhone 4 5mp Camera?

I mean, clearly I wasn't expecting a DSLR. I think it's great quality for an always-with-you point-and-shoot. It just won't be replacing any 'heavy-duty' cameras for task-specific shooting.

I still want one.

720p at 60 fps?

I thought that the EVO could only shoot at 24fps, which is what causes videos with fast movement to be so choppy?

does anyone know why Apple didnt use the Xenon flash? is it because of the size?

They look like they have a heavy amount of (poor) noise reduction applied. Maybe to make up for all the noise you get with 8 MP on the tiny sensor. The fullsize iPhone 4 pics have much more detail.

Yeah, agreed. The EVO pics aren't horrible, but the 8MP spec is certainly a bad joke. The effective resolution (i.e. the size at which you wouldn't be humiliated to make the photos public) is far lower.

No you didn't. They're not Ray Bans, it's a smudge on the lens of the sunglasses.

I think it's just a reflection of a cloud in the sky.

Nice looking images... for a device that can also make phone calls, play music and video, browse the internet and thousands of other things - all in the palm of your hand. :)

Zoom to 100%, leave image in top left area.

Looks like crap. 100% crap. Everything is a blurry mess can't make any details out.
