Actually, glasses used in displays are manufactured using what are called tank melts, which output extremely consistently. The op's scratches are likely due to sand.

This is a good point. I wonder what the scratch characteristics of this coating are...

I'm not talking about variances in the iPhone 4, I'm talking about the hardness of glass in general.

Your funny. Does this mean you need to put a scratch protector on your car to avoid being scratched?

Wax? Obviously its not going to protect from a key or rock, but people put wax on to protect the paint. Preventing and filling in micro-scratches is one of the benefits of wax.

i dont get how your screen got scratched honestly lol. my 3g went through a war in my pocket and i treated it like it was nothing to me. the chrome finish on the outside was banged up real bad. the back was scratched and especially the apple logo. but for some odd reason the screen was never scratched. I'm just wondering how did yours scratch?

The 3g didn't have an oleophobic coating... Its much easier to scratch the coating than it is the glass.

My coworker scoffed at me applying an InvisibleSHIELD (peeled it off and got a 3-pack of another brand at AT&T store) on my iPhone 4 as soon as it came out of the box.

Days later, he bitched that he somehow got a scratch right in the middle of the screen of his iPhone 4.

Who's the silly one now?

Screen protectors are a must. Not sure why folks would believe someone who tells them that the iPhone has some sort of scratch-proof glass.....but it doesn't.

Sorry, OP!

But THANKS for reminding me to put my full BSE on. Its right here in my face in the envelope and I always forget to put it on my phone.

See this here is the mystery! I have no clue how it got scratched, and the marks left behind don't make it clearly evident what the culprit was either. That's the annoying part. I would just expect that the "super durable scratch resistant glass" that they tout wouldn't scratch so easily given the fact that I never introduced it in to an environment that would condone it scratching so easily....

I'd suggest just throwing it on the floor a few times then going to Apple for a replacement claiming you were drunk.

Apparently smashing whilst drunk is a legitimate reason for replacement.

+1, I may just try this, calling first obviously to see if they will cover it. ;)

However, if they are replacing screens for something as ridiculous as this, then they should replace mine how it is now seeing that they were the ones that told me not to waste my money on a screen protector.....

I wonder where people get that Idea.

Love putting 15 dollar protectors on a 600 dollar + device.

Mine developed a scratch after being babied the whole first month. (3g and 3gs and iPhone 2g all have no scratches.)

If you're car got keyed would you say "Oh it's okay. It sill works. I'm not annoyed that my brand new car has a giant scratch on it. Still runs like a champ" People do care about there devices. Why would you want your beautiful display to be covered with scratches?

Comparing a $30,000 vehicle and a $200 iPhone is a bit silly.

I like this story. I've never understood why people chastise those who want to put screen protectors on. Unless they're going to pay for someone else's repairs or replacements, let them put whatever they want on their phone to protect it.

It says it is more scratch resistant than ever.....not scratch-proof.

You might not like the idea of putting a screen protector on your phone, but I'd imagine you like the idea of a scratched screen less.

It's not a $200 phone. Minimum two year data plan at $30/month = $720, but then if you figure a normal phone + data + text plan of say, $80/month (conservative), it's now $1920, plus the $200. Still not $30K, but maybe puts it in better perspective.

As anecdotal as it may be, even your first line agrees with me. It's clearly more scratched than my other iPhones, in my case.

No, but if your shiny new car got scratched wouldn't you be angry. Would you be saying it's only a scratch I'm wrong for being angry that something I've invested money in partly due to its aesthetics is damaged. A scratched car or a scratched phone are not ruined by the scratch but you still wouldn't like to be called a whiner or "that it's nothing" for being a little displeased that your possession is devalued or damaged in your eyes. There is a little too much judging going on around here, especially when people delve into issues with their phone.

Oh so scratches are bad only when it is something of very great value. Cost is relative to someone's position in life, but let's stick with your argument. The cost of the devices make no differences. The person still feels like they have damaged something that they value greatly. A phone that relies on a beautiful display for videos, web browsing, and games if scratched is not something you can just automatically get over. You feel bad and you have frustrations no matter how much the cost is. ($300 is not chump change) You can still use the phone or Car but you lose a bit of the newness or value of the device. I think the OP has a valid reason to be displeased even if it is his fault.

Metaphor fail. If I scratched my own car Its a completely different story.

Even if you accidentally scratched your own car, you would still be upset about a scratch on your car. People saying get over it are being kind of rude to the OP. I'm sure others would be mad if they found a scratch on their phone. People want their things to be nice. I think a lot of people in here were being rude.

No I wouldn't, and 99% of people wouldn't be so upset as to need to vent online and call someone an asshat about it

geesh you people here have ocd to the max

if you accidentally scratch your car, it's your fault but you get over it

Its a horrible metaphor, this is about personal responsibility , not someone attacking your car.

If someone scratched my car you damn well better believe i would be upset, same thing goes if someone dropped my iPhone

It's ...

... always the first scratch, that hurts the most - but the pain eases, like your Grandma will tell you.

Any glas is prone to scratches from sand, as sand itself is a hackload of different materials grinded in microscopic sizes, including traces of diamond. It isn't worthwhile to mine your pockets for them yet, but just so you know it's there. Anyone who experienced a drop on sandy grounds (streets, pavements and the like) will get scratches. Same goes for sand in your pockets - and there will be some, no matter how careful you are.

Glass can only be scratched by a diamond or extreme hard metal. I think the scratches you see are actually scratches to oleophobic coating.

Scratches to the oleophobic coating show really well on the black iphone 4

My 3G was extremely scratched up and last time I checked I don't walk around with a pocketful of diamonds. Sand was the culprit and is the worst thing for devices with a screen. My work takes me onto beaches a lot so there is no way I can really avoid this.

Are there any good thin screen protectors that you can't really feel? And what happened to the screen being unscratchable Gorilla Glass?

Seriously. I'm lucky that my scratches are on the back, which probably comes from setting it down on tables and desks. Apple's claim about how unscratchable it is is complete BS. If Steve Jobs would stop complementing how "beautiful" everything is, I'd be much happier. I mean if it looks so damn good, why exactly is Apple selling Apple-branded half-cases?

Methinks Apple is going backward in the durability department. The first iPhone had a back made of METAL, the next one out of fancy plasticlike stuff, and now we're to glass. I assume the iPhone 5 back will be made out of Kleenex.

Apple should do some research on actual users and find out how many use cases. Apple should then realize that YOU SHOULD HAVE CASES AVAILABLE ON LAUNCH DAY. InCase couldn't have them ready because Apple held back on the specs for so long.
