I think they do.

I remember saying "Steve Jobs had died" and a non-techy said "Is that the Apple guy?" So he is known, albeit more vaguely, by other people.

In the same way I have no real knowledge or deep interest in science, but I know who Steve Hawking is and was interested in the film The Theory of Everything.
