First things to do software wise w/a brand new Macbook Pro?

I searched, but did not find any threads regarding what diagnostics such as a battery test, etc to do. I'm new to mac, having used one for about 6 months but passed down.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

No, if you read the links, there are many links to software recommendations. Those posts are not just for troubleshooting, but for basic Mac knowledge.

Ah didn't see that section my bad. I'm looking at the "what cool little OS X apps do you use" thread at a lot of the apps about codec/etc are beyond me..

There's nothing special you need to do as far as diagnostics or maintenance. Just use your MBP and when you find the need for something, that's the time to look for an app that does what you want.

If you want to save some space, you can run monolingual or another cleaning program to get ride of unused languages. Also, xslimmer will shrink the size of many applications.
