There's nothing special you need to do as far as diagnostics or maintenance. Just use your MBP and when you find the need for something, that's the time to look for an app that does what you want.
If you want to save some space, you can run monolingual or another cleaning program to get ride of unused languages. Also, xslimmer will shrink the size of many applications.
