First time Jailbreaking iPhone

Hey everyone. Im about to jailbreak my iPhone 3GS that i have had for over a year now. Its still a "virgin" so to speak with jailbreaking, as its clean and never has been through anything like that.

Now i know Greenpoison and Snowbreeze 2.1 jail breaks 4.1, which my 3GS is running.

Im still new to this and looked around and researched myself. However im still confused and wanting to be 100% before i go through with it.

1) Should i go with greenpoison or snowbreeze?

2) Do i have to back up anything or something? As in, what if i want to erase the jailbreak and have my phone back to normal as if i never jailbroken it? What do i need to do before i jailbreak my phone in order to do that in the future?

3) Is there ANYTHING I should do before I jailbreak? Such as number 2, back up any files, anything?

4) Whats this SHSH i hear about? Do i need it or what? I know its a bunch of files from my iPhone. I dont know. Im stuck on this one if i should worry about it or not.

5) Am I good to go?

Be great if people can help me out with this. :D I just want my first jailbreak to go as smoothly as possible. Thanks!~
 
I'd say go with Redsn0w. It's the best of the jailbreaking programs as of this writing. Just a quick work of advice, don't ever use anything made by iH8tesnow like sn0wbreeze. I've found it very buggy and damaging. The default iTunes backup should work fine. Other then that, you good to go.
 
Applejucied do you feel like playing the next WW Simple game? I know you kind of didn't get do to much last game.

So I should go with Redsnow? Does it support jailbreaking 4.1?
What about the whole SHSD thingy. Anything else i need to do before jailbreaking my phone?

Edit: Its alright. Happens all the time lol

Upgrade your iPhone to 4.1, download redsn0w and point it to the 4.1 firmware bundle for the iPhone 3Gs, then let it go. The SHSH thing you don't really need to worry about, just click the "yes make my life easier" button in Cydia. And do it soon, Apple won't be giving out the 4.1 SHSH blobs much longer.

My 3GS is already running 4.1 [8B117]
I downloaded redsn0w and its telling me to "Please select the corresponding IPSW for your CURRENT firmware"

And it has browse. Where do i find this "IPSW"? :[

And yeah, i still dont even know what a SHSH blob is so wont worry about it.

SHSH "blobs" are the validation bits from Apple that tell the firmware it's okay to run - they only sign the current version as a general rule. As I recall, the phone also doesn't store them in a recoverable manner.

When you run Cydia for the first time, hit the "Make My Life Easier" option, it will query Apple for the current set of blobs, and the rest thereafter.
 
Alright well ive gotten to the part where im given these options:

  • Install Cydia
  • Verbose Boot
  • Custom boot logo
  • Custom recovery logo
  • Just boot tethered now
  • Just enter pwned DFU mode right now

What do i do now?

You want a simple process use limera1n or Greenpo1son. Download from the limera1n or Greenpo1son site plug your phone in and hit the button.

No options, no ipsw download etc.

End of story

agreed, i used greenpois0n and it was real easy and it was my first attempt at jailbreaking a phone, once your jailbroken it instals an icon called installer i believe once you tap that you have the cydia install available, once you have cydia installed just use youtube for best Cydia tweaks, best cydia themes and best cydia apps and from there you can learn as you go

Was gonna go with green poison but it just seemed like redsn0w was a better program. Ifno one can help me with it ill most likely go with greenpoison.

Im just stuck on what option to do on redsn0w.

if there is no youtube video tutorial on it i would say its not your easiest option, there is many greenpois0n video turorials and its very staight forward
