It may sound odd but I would just like to ask you guys how sturdy is this laptop.I plan to use this laptop for next 4-5 years and i m really scared that it might get a dent or something.I m using a backpack and I even while slipping it in the backpack I make sure I dont hold it too hard.
This model has been around for past 3 years so I would just like to enquire how had been the experience of you guys using this model for past 2-3 years.
Can I just forget to keep that extra care and start using it normally...

Its made out of Titanium, what do you think??:D I mean I wouldn't throw it around, it is still a lap top, but It is much more durable than other laptops.

In past couple of days of using this machine I've been rather TOO protective about this machine.I need this machine just for browsing , some gaming and movies. So although I don't strain the processor but I surely spend a lot of time on it.I plan to use it for next 5 years and just cant tolerate any bit of dent/scratch on it...
But frankly I'm not enjoying this over protective attitude,I want to be more casual in my usage. So just want to be sure if its durable enough. It surely seem so:)

Where are you getting your information?! Apple hasn't made titanium computers for over 7 years! It's made out of aluminum, not titanium. That being said, these new laptops are far more durable than the titanium ones Apple made.

rohit6060, you have nothing to worry about in terms of durability. Take care of it, but don't worry about it.

one more query guys,
I've selected automatic settings for display as well as the back-lit display.
The display behaves well under changing lighting conditions but the keyboard actually behaves opposite i.e. its light increases with outside light and decreases with dimming light.I want it to be completely off while there is external light and glow at minimum level when in dark...Possible?

Secondly,if I select some brightness level for display I have noticed it goes back to original with use. That means lets say for a particular amount of light display is at 10 points,I manually increase it to 12,not keep in dark, lets say it goes to 5 points, now put in back to same light intensity,it'll go to 10 points and not 12 points. That means level of brightness is fixed for a particular intensity of light that cant be changed?M I right?

Lastly,
if I use my Macbook all the time on power and use it on battery once in 4-5 days, will that increase my battery life?plz give detailed answer about this.i had a hp laptop before which I always used on power, after a couple of months I realized due to overcharging its battery cells got damaged and I never got to use my laptop's battery...
I remain indoor so I can plug in all the time...

You can monitor your battery with the awesome tool coconutBattery http://www.coconut-flavour.com/

I have my MB which is usually on battery and my MBP usually plugged in and both are holding up extremely well compared to my wife's Lenovo that has already had to have one battery replacement.

You still need to calibrate your battery every so often (IIRC Apple recommends doing it every month) by using it until it is fully drained and then letting it charge to capacity.

Looks like three more to me.

No.

I have no idea.

Doing that will not improve battery life at all. I doubt it will have any effect.

This is happening because you have it set to automatically adjust your brightness levels.

It's acting normally. The more light there is around you, the more light is needed to see the backlight of the keyboard. The less light there is around you, the dimmer the backlight should be to prevent distraction.

You can train the computer somewhat by adjusting the backlight manually, and it will remember the levels you wanted. At least, that's how it worked on my PowerBook G4 with a backlit keyboard, I don't have personal experience with the new MBPs.

If you want direct control over it, install some third party software like LabTick. http://labtick.proculo.de/

FWIW on the 2008 MB that I am on now the backlight is behaving as you want it. Where I am now with a window behind me the KB light is OFF and doesn't even respond to the F5/F6 keys to control its level. if I cover the ambient light sensor it turns on. Do you have "illuminate keyboard in low light conditions" checked in System Preferences -> Keyboard?

Could it be that what you consider well-lit is still pretty dim?

Why do u need the backlight in proper lighting conditions? It should be off....

whats that?
Lab Tick - Introducing Control.

Have you ever been annoyed by your PowerBook's (or MacBook Pro's) backlit keyboard? You can not control it, you simply have to deal with the behaviour dictated by the ambient light sensor, which sometimes does not work really well. The idea of a backlit keyboard is awesome, but the implementation in Mac OS X has its flaws. Lab Tick aims to fix them.

More importantly it was the subject of an earlier post in the thread.

If the OP doesn't read the thread there's really not much we can do.

It could also be a faulty Ambient Light Sensor.

It seems to be a occurrence of late, OP's not really participating in the solving of their problems and not reading the threads.
And repliers like me not seeing you already provided the correct link. ;)

My apology,just missed that post.
I downloaded lab tick but still cant get it as I require..
In fact I cant c any benefit.
I checked on automatic light settings from system preferences and as you do that its the same thing irrespective of what you do in lab tick...
Can some1 plz mention what options should I select,I want my KB light to be completely off even if there is little amount of light and it should lit just 10-20% when in complete dark..

You can't change the curves that Apple has established via any publicly disclosed means. (It would be nice if the setting was in a plist somewhere). So either you control it manually with the keys or Lab Tick or you check to see if you have a faulty Ambient Light Sensor.

I whipped up some code that tests the Ambient Light Sensor and KB backlight on my MBP. It shows that the regular light level in my office is not enough to turn off my backlight. However if I shine a flashlight at it, I can get it to turn off completely easily.

First, can you replicate this? Can you shine a light at the ALS (usually near your iSight) and get the backlight to turn completely off? I found that test to be easiest with the backlight all the way up.

If that doesn't work, you most likely have a defective Ambient Light Sensor. If it does work, it may still be defective (as in reading too low) and you might benefit from my code.

Ambient light sensor is placed somewhere within the speaker grill, thats what the "help" says...
I dont think theres a problem with sensor. Its behaving quite well and as I;ve searched, this the usual behavior. It goes off only in EXTREMELY bright light otherwise its just the way it is.I guess its better to control manually.

Secondly,
My keyboard backlight lits up to maximum everytime I open Windows via boot camp...Any solution to ths?

Moving ahead,
I m not really enjoying the preview app,you have to select all the pics you wish to c unlike windows where you just have to press the next key..
Any alternative?

Doubt it. Both my notebooks have the ALS up by the iSight, and you can test it easily by covering the iSight with your hand. IIRC the only Macs with light sensors in the speaker grills are iMacs.

Did you install the Boot Camp drivers?

Quick View? iPhoto? ...

Put the finder in "quick view" mode and use the cover flow like feature. Or maybe you should be using iPhoto

Oh, and about the "permanent delete". The "rm" command in Terminal does that. But it does require that you type two characters and then drop the item to be "removed" and hit "enter". But why not drag to trash then at some later point empty the trash?
