So...I may have hit the lottery. It turns out the battery that came with the laptop is one of those under the 2006 recall.

I'll be calling Apple tomorrow morning to see if I can still get it replaced. Untill then I was curious if anyone knows off the top of their head if warranty matters with these things? Obviously the laptop is out of warranty, but the battery is still a danger, and I didn't see an expiration date anywhere regarding the recall.

A lot of things that you should know..

The first thing that you need to know is that it is out of date, and isn't compatible with a lot of things. The reason that it isn't compatible is because Apple switched to using Intel processors and the PPC chip computers were no longer supported with the new software, like iTunes.

Also, if this is your first mac, please don't expect this of Apple, they are better than this , it's just an older computer, who still has okay specs, just not supported because they switched.

Back to how the computer isn't supported anymore. The Powerbook cannot get the newest safari, the mac app store, iLife, iWork, Time Machine, FireFox, Google Chrome, and a lot of other things.

Since the laptop doesn't support the latest version of iTunes, you can't use it to sync newer iPod classics, iPod touches, and iPod nanos, a lot of iPods can still sync tho..

I myself have been the owner of quite a few PowerPC Mac's and just purchased my iMac G4 a few weeks ago just because I love the design so much. So far it's proven itself to be a pretty decent internet browsing, Word, iTunes, light iPhoto machine even though it's nearing 9 years old. If you're looking for a great, fast web browsing experience on Tiger download OmniWeb, one of the few web browsers still supported under Tiger and PPC in general. Much faster than Safari and doesn't use nearly as much RAM as it does either. For YouTube, download MacTubes. It's a great app that lets you search for YouTube videos in an iTunes like interface and even download and save them to your hard drive. To be honest though, YouTube runs better on Windows machines than any Mac I have ever used (that includes quite a few Intel models)

If you want to use the latest software, you might want to update to Leopard. Tiger is really starting to loose alot of software support (but then again, PPC is in general) and alot of newer apps don't support anything under Leopard (already mentioned). Be warned, copies of Leopard are still going for $100. I myself have decided to wait until the prices go down and I have enough RAM on the machine to warrant the upgrade.

The 12" PowerBook is a gorgeous machine and should still give you 2-3 years of useable service before the whole PPC platform is completely abandoned. If I have mentioned anything that has already been posted, I apologize. I didn't read through all the posts so I'm sure there are quite a few things that have been repeated.

I couldn't find a decent battery for my g4 tibook first gen that was reasonably priced, so i went and got a win 7 laptop andmade my tibook the desktop. today i traded my windows laptop for a friend of mines g4 ibook 1.2 ghz/512 ram using it now and much happier using mac again for everything. windows 7 is nice but just not the same as a mac!! im sure you will be happy with your ppc mac for a long time!! apple rules period.
