Don't know anyone who has an X and have only seen one in YouTube videos so i went to see one today in a phone shop, it was on display with all the other phones, I have to say I was expecting the notch to look alot worse but it's not that big or it doesn't come down as much, it does feel a nice and comfortable to hold and use, thinking of getting the new X so just wanted to see the current X, anyone else think it wasn't as bad when they went to see it or bought it?

There is a thread or two about this and most of the horror of the notch died down after people got it in their hands. It was never an issue to me and I do not even notice the notch. Others, you would think, are being stabbed through the heart the notch hurts them so much.

All of this is much like the red dot on the Apple Watch with LTE! People went crazy but it died down.

The X has been a great phone for me. love it.

The Notch is only a ‘big’ issue on tech forum, because you have those who want to vehemently complain about Apple one way or another about something, but in the outside world, for those who I do know own the iPhone X, Have never even commented on the Notch at all. It’s been a non-issue ever since it was implemented.

It surprised me when I first saw one in the shops. The notch does cut into everything though, but it is small. The screen colours are fantastic!

Agree 100%. Amen

Personally I never understood what all the people were complaining about with the notch. I mean really there have been much worse design choices on smart phones over the years, and it seems the notch got unfair attention.

I have had my iPhone X since launch day, and the notch has not once bugged me. Apple nicely fit the UI for the time and all that jazz around the notch, so it's not that big of a deal to me. It looks better than having to see the word "Verizon" or "At&t" in that top UI bar personally. And the FaceID is more than worth the notch being there.

I adjusted to the notch relatively quick. Never hated it one bit. I think it makes the phone unique. You don’t notice the notch unless you purposely look at it.

Or when you zoom a video, which makes you lose video all the way around the phone and not just the notch.

Where do you live op?

I have been seeing the iPhone X everywhere since last December.

If the OP doesn’t live/work in or near a big city, or doesn’t pay a lot of attention to strangers phones, it’s not that unbelievable. I only personally know two people who own a X, and even though I live just outside of Toronto and visit the city regularly, and I do pay attention to strangers’ phones because I’m interested in tech, I’ve probably seen fewer than 10 in the wild, so to speak.

The anti-notch hype was always overblown. It's mostly just a blank portion of the status bar. If it were as horrible as everyone seemed to claim, it wouldn't be showing up in such a long list of Android devices now.

It's a natural step: fill as much of the face of the device as you can with display. The alternative would be to have more deadspace...

That LTE dot though... It serves no purpose other than to publicize the internal function of the device. I've mostly learned to ignore it, but I still think it was a really bad, and very un-Apple design decision (clashing colors, clashing textures, no functional intent...). The Watch is great though.

I never saw it as an issue during the initial announcement in September of 2017, nor when I got mine when they first shipped. The overwhelming majority of people really don't care about it.

I live in a large city and don't know anyone besides myself, with a iPhone X (and I have two, if that tells you how much I like the phone). It is a great phone. Looking forward to reading about and seeing the new phones in a few weeks.

Ya I'm in Ireland, I didn't go to look at the x because I bought the 8 plus last year, but with the three X design iPhones coming this year i just wanted to see for myself, you know! I honestly thought last year that the X was going to be a flop so i went for the safe bet, but now the old design is gone and the X design is the future for the next few years at least, so even if i have reservations i might as well jump on the X band wagon as there will be no choice for people wanting the latest iphone but to adopt the X design.

Everyone thought the iPhone X was going to be a flop last year due to price or notch.

I got both an iPhone 8 Plus and an iPhone X last year.

Your going to love Face ID, i was skeptical last year .

I used to be a X denier as well, but I love it. I still can't stand Face ID compared to Touch ID, but I will live. (Only because it makes Apple Pay a lot slower to use, but it is still faster than a regular credit card)

Yes your spot on, i haven't been in a cave!. It's like you said i just haven't seen anyone with an X and the nearest phone shop to me is cork, about 60 miles, the thing is, let's not forget the price of the x Last year, I bought the 8 plus from Apple last year, think it was €1100 + fast charge adapter + cable, lol, and the X was €1250-1300, so as we all know it's ridiculous at this stage, I mean your talking nearly €800 on 2 year contract here in Ireland if you do it that way, why i haven't seen one is because people are just not willing to pony up that kinda money either way for a phone

it seemed like the entire world had nothing else to do than rant about Apple for the notch and how stupid this is.
this beats "think different" efficiency in orders of magnitude, just like "courage" to remove the audio port.
even if its bad advertisement, its still advertisement, for free, next level marketing by :apple:

nowadays literally every phone company has an iPhone X knockoff with a notch. good lord :)

Thing is, are people that have a dislike with the X for whatever reason not going to upgrade for the next few years, it's like this, if you like a certain brand of car and upgrade to the newer model you know that the newer one is more refined and better engineered but liked the design of the last one better, you would probably get the newer one because the brand and model has been reliable and trustworthy, this is were I'm at, sometimes you just got to go along with it if you want a new iPhone with cutting-edge technology, it's all X design from this year on so what people do that don't like the X design I don't know

That’s hilarious to watch.
That guy is pissed.

I see plenty of Xs as I live in the inner city. The brightness and contrast of the screen help the notch to disappear, which may sound counter-intuitive but I think it's just normal to focus on the content rather than dead-space.

I'm concerned about how the X handles different aspect ratios for video because I've seen on YouTube how it can clip the top and bottom off videos or have all-over letter boxing sometimes. Neither of these are acceptable. Side-bezels are OK for 16:9 content but never top or bottom clipping and certainly not all-over letter boxing.
