When are they going to add an analogue audio output like an RCA or even a Minijack output? Would be a great way to play my music wirelessly!

Apple is sending these out to developers early, right? Maybe that's how he got it.

But if he actually has an iPad Pro I have no explanation for that.
If so then he better prepare for a lawsuit. It specifically says he can't do this under than agreement.

Looks great to me, excited to finally be upgrading my ATV2.

One big issue though, you still need multiple remotes to operate your TV. In Apple's idea of a perfect world, no one would ever want to switch inputs because ATV serves all of everyone's needs. But that's just not the case for me, and especially for gamers.

The remote looks great, but universal remotes will have a tough time emulating its functionality.
I thought this one can operate your tv and even change inputs per video.

So, it comes with a charging cable that can't be used with the ATV? That's a standard USB connector, not a USB-C. I was expecting a charging brick that could be plugged into the wall next to your TV chair, but no dice. So where exactly is Apple thinking it will be plugged in to charge? Odd.

To one of the 400 chargers we already have. Seriously, I have so many now that I have extras in a drawer. I don't need another one.

Despite not arriving until the end of October, YouTuber Andru Edwards has gotten ahold of the fourth-generation Apple TV and unboxed it on video. The video, which appears to be the first unboxing of the device, offers a glimpse at the new packaging for Apple's new set-top box.

The new Apple TV's packaging is all-black and features a picture of the top of the device on the top of the box. Once opened, the user is presented with the Apple TV box and the brand new Siri Remote. Underneath those are a Lightning cable to charge the new remote and a power cable.

Edwards, who says he received his Apple TV on the day of Apple's "Hey Siri" event, then provides a closer look at both the set-top box and remote.

The fourth-generation Apple TV will be available at the end of October. It'll be priced at $149.99 for the 32 GB option and $199.99 for the 64 GB option.

He could have plugged it in and started a show or downloaded a game.

[QUOTE="Dislike the loss of optical audio also. Having AirPlay work without the television on is excellent.[/QUOTE]

Ditto! Now we gogta go out and get a damn airport express just to handle AirPlay audio...lol. Ugh. I also enjoyed being Abe to AirPlay to my stereo without having to bother with the TV!

My understanding is that the USB Type-C port is backwards compatible with all other USB standards but it isn't physically compatible. You could buy an adapter for the port if you really wanted to.

Other than that, I think it's safe to assume that in 2015, it is relatively easy for someone to gain access to a USB port in their household to charge the Apple Remote.

The USB Type-C port on the Apple TV must be meant for something else or for future add-ons and not necessarily for charging the remote which seems like a completely separate process.

Since it's not on sale yet and Apple hasn't given out any review samples to the press and he says he also has an iPad Pro to unbox it would appear this is stolen property.

I wonder if Apple will come down on him?

No HDMI cord included? That's annoying.
This is one thing among many that apple is being super greedy about. HDMI cables like most cables cost them pennies. Yet, they want to sell you a $29 HDMI cable separate from the aTV at the Apple Store. Just like they want to sell you the $19 Lightning cable and $19 wall plug separately...it's such a joke! Things like this really turn me off w/Apple sometimes. Acting like they don't have billions of dollars.

no 4K support & the loss of optical audio out = FAIL

I wished it had 4K, but it is not like it is a surprise that it did not. I think ATV2 not having 1080p was more of a fail than 4K on ATV4, and it did well.

Now the loss of the optical audio was a surprise for me, but for me, not a deal killer.

There will definitely be more. This was just a quick and dirty unboxing while I get more stuff shot and edited and all that.

I am a subscriber now!

Please show how HomeSharing works/looks, and please test whether properly tagged and named tv shows or movies in itunes (either manually or using iFlicks or iDentify or Subler) show up in the Siri search results alongside the other services. Thanks!

Most people already own an HDMI cable or they are just going to use the same HDMI cable they were already using with their current Apple TV.

Plus, if Apple supplied their own cable then everyone would bitch about how they don't like the cable, that there are cheaper and better cables available on the market, and that they don't want to use it. Kinda like the Apple Earbuds everyone complains about.

Not only is it is a better decision to let people choose their own cable but it also saves them money. I see it as a win-win. No one is forcing anyone to buy Apple branded HDMI cables.

no, they'll be fine -- I'm betting it still supports normal d-pad commands as found on universal remotes. just as the current version has honored prev/next chapter commands despite not having those buttons on the Apple remote.

"I'm not sure what the TV button is yet..." Lmao

Am going to assume he was one of the devs who got their hands on one from the conference.

Would be nice to see an OS video, rather than an unboxing of the actual device. I mean, thanks? But uhh...
As Apple's website states, media reviews are not allowed. And devs don't get them until at least a week from now. They announce who's getting them Monday.

Traditionally, the USB port on the back has been for diagnostic use only. Back in the aTV2 days, you could jailbreak them and connect external storage which was pretty slick. For this reason, they tend to sell for a decent amount of money still online. Would be nice still if Apple opened up this port someday for external storage, but highly doubt it :/

I am more happy it came with a lightning cable than HDMI. HDMI are pretty cheap, but a quality lightning cable are the cost of a few HDMI cables.

Why is the remote rechargeable? Seems like a pain in the ass.
The remote is rechargeable now because it uses Bluetooth, it is much more powerful, it has more features, and consumes more power.

The old, crappy, RF remotes that came with the old Apple TV's that everyone absolutely hated – because they had to be pointed directly at the Apple TV and nothing could be between you and the set top box – have been replaced. Those remotes could run forever without needing a charging mechanism because they were incredibly basic and low-power. They didn't have Siri, they didn't have a touch pad and they didn't have an accelerometer for Wii-like gaming experiences.
