My problems with High Sierra have largely disappeared, but it took a good week of messing round and a clean install. After all of that there is very little in the way of tangible improvement and some things may be worse. I think it's a bit slower overall, but hope some of the mythical changes "under the hood" actually produce a more secure and stable system over the long run.

On a side note, my daughter has a new MacBook Pro and I've advised her to wait before moving from Sierra to High Sierra. There is no compelling reason to upgrade right now from what I can see.

High Sierra feels slower on my iMac as well and I have the end 2015 one so its a recent computer. I understand if HS is just under the hood changes but this kind of release isn't suppose to have so many bugs and slow down your computer if the main focus of this release is supposedly to improve things up.

At this time, they're zero advantage to upgrade especially if you dont have a SSD. I regret upgrading and I should stay with Sierra at least until a .2 update.

Following the update of my MBP today to the 10.13 High Sierra supplemental update, I began having problems. When using my laptop all is fine. When I walk away and there is no interaction with the laptop for approximately 10 minutes, a process named mediaanalysisd is started. This is using about 130% of the processor, and switches the GPU from the integrated to the discrete chip. Of course, this uses a LOT of battery and gets the laptop processor up to 195 degrees thereby getting the fans up to high speed using more battery. Anyone else notice this behavior? I found all this detail using iStat Menus. As soon as I touch any input on this machine, the process is terminated, the processor drops to 2%, the GPU switches to the integrated, the machine starts to cool and the fans eventually slow. This happens repeatedly. Do I now have to sleep the machine every time I walk away to save the battery? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I do. I have an iMac that I upgraded from 10.12.6 to 10.13.1 last week and noticed that the idle power usage doubled since the upgrade. The root cause of this was tracked down to the mediaanalysisd process as you mentioned. analyzing the LaunchAgent plist data, it's supposed to run only when the computer is idle, so it's acting exactly as intended. But the problem is that it's acting up so much, which wasn't something I experienced before. I removed the plist file for the process from the /System/Library/LaunchAgent folder (you may need to disable SIP first by typing "csrutil disable" from recovery boot) to prevent the process from starting, and the system returned to normal since.
