Hm, if the heart rate sensor is accurate, I'll probably get a Charge HR to get rid of the chest belt. Hopefully it works better than the existing wrist-worn HR monitors.

Apple Watch only has one day battery life.

FitBit's have up to 5 days.

Except no one's actually VERIFIED the battery life on the device yet.

Would I be surprised if the battery only lasted a day? Sure.

Would I be surprised if they managed to squeeze more battery life out of it? No.

Will I jump to conclusions about a device I don't have much information on? Hell no. I'm just pointing out that based on what fitbit has released on the Surge, for not much more you can get a fully functional device that is going to give you more than your heart rate and a step count.

For $100 less and built in GPS this might be a better option for me (at this point in time) than the Apple Watch. The thing that would definitely push me over the edge is if I could transfer music/podcasts/audiobooks to the device so that I can listen while running without needing to bring my iPhone along

With no Apple Health integration, all this is kind of a fail for iOS users. What silly people they are.
With no FitBit integration, all other fitness devices are a big fail for FitBit users. What silly people they are.

You base your statement on the assumption that the Apple Health ecosystem will be clearly better than the FitBit ecosystem. That might be so in the future, but at the moment that is not such a clear-cut decision.

Looks like MR was stretching for a "buffer" story so they could come right back with yet another nfc/cvs/currentC story without it looking like 5 in a row :)

To bad they refuse to integrate with Health Kit. I would love the HR. I don't need a watch but I would just like to track heartbeat. But if it means having it isolated in the app, it's not worth it.

Just pointing out that for both surge and the iWatch, that the same statements can be made.

Don't be hypocritical. uphold all tech to the same standards. Apple hasn't released the iWatch yet either and maybe unable to hit their claims as well.

we might be surprised, or let down by either.

Why would anyone with an iOS device want a fitness tracker when it's intentionally not to be integrated with healthkit?

Because there are other health/fitness apps for iOS beside the Health app? The Health app is just one health/fitness app beyond many. Why would anybody buy an ebook reader that does not integrate with iBooks?

I actually like the Charge. I wanted a Force before they were recalled, but I basically only wanted the clock and sleep tracking. $129 is a little steep for just the features I want so I held off on the Force. I actually ordered a discounted Jawbone Up last week because it was only $40. I know it's the one without Bluetooth and had no screen, but for $40, I'll take it. If the Charge ever goes to $100, I'll probably get one, but the lack of Health integration baffles me.

But I suppose since they are both un-released all of this is speculation on my part.
Though we know much more details about the FitBit products than about the Apple Watch.

----------

how accurate are the step counts? i have a fitbit one, and i use it for sleep tracking. when i get up in the morning it says that i have walked ~100 steps or so. is this just a limitation of the fitbit one?
Maybe you're just sleepwalking. :D

Not Sure About Apple Watch

From what I can see, the Apple Watch is an amazing feat of technology and as is typical with Apple is beautifully designed.

However, I'm not sure I want to be out in public somewhere with my MBP open, while I am talking on my iPhone, with my iPad nearby, while looking at my Apple Watch to see what time it is.

I would like an activity tracker that is as minimal as possible, that doesn't look like a watch and integrates with HealthKit.

Apple Watch only has one day battery life.

FitBit's have up to 5 days.

And Apple watch is in the charging station while you sleep. So it isn't a sleep tracker, which after steps is the most useful feature for wearables. One thing you want to know and record is how much sleep you are getting over the course of a week. Apple Watch can't do that.

Just take FitBit's existing claims on battery life for their current devices and compare it with the actual battery life and you will be able to get a pretty solid idea on the actual battery life of the Surge. What you are doing here is just FUD.

I was once in China taking a shortcut through a back alley. Anyway, I became self conscious that I was carrying $3,000 in electronics (i.e., a couple of months wages) and some of it was very visible on my person. So I get where you are going here.

so...for only $100 more you can get the Apple Watch

Yep. Or another way of looking at it: for $100 less than the Apple Watch, you can get a watch that you don't have to charge nightly and will allow you to leave your phone home when you go for a run.

I'm not terribly interested in either, but my wife really likes the fitness aspects of the Apple Watch. If the Surge is well-executed, she may prefer it instead.

I've been using various Fitbit products for a while, and had the opportunity Misfit Shine to try for the next week or so. The Shine exports steps to HealthKit, which I thought would be kind of interesting to try out. So I've only been using the Shine for about a day now, but I'm not getting why everyone is making such a big deal out of HealthKit so far. Maybe I'm missing something, but from a data presentation and recording perspective it doesn't seem to be all that great. Not being able to see a graph of what time I was active yesterday is kind of annoying.

I'm not feeling like I've been missing out on a lot by not having HealthKit integration so far. Is there something else to HealthKit that I'm not seeing? I was pretty content to stay within the Fitbit app prior to the release of iOS 8, and I haven't seen anything that's made me change my mind so far.

But... HealthKit is still an app that you have to pull up right?

The benefit to using Healthkit is when using multiple health tracking apps. If they all communicate to Health, you can view all your stats in one app. For example, I can see my step data from my Misfit Flash, my sleep data from Sleep Cycle, and my calorie intake from MyFitnesspal, all in Health.

Look at the Vivosmart or forthcoming Mio devices, Fuse and Velo ( include HR monitor - same tech. as Link ) - they are focused to health and connect to Ant+ devices for speed sensors etc.

The vivosmart will sync with Health.app - limited integration so far.

Thanks for sharing.

Looked great for a second then I realised that you needed a load of other devices to really get it to work for you unfortunately.

Fitbit and Apple seem to have figured out that fitness-wise one size fits all would be great.

If that means I have to charge every night then I'm okay with that.

Waterproof and accurate swim integration would win a few points from me too!
