This is actually really good news. I really like my Apple Watch 11, but the biggest downside for me is wearing it to bed for sleep tracking. It’s a bit bulky to sleep with, and having to work charging into the routine doesn’t help either.

For sleep tracking, a lot of Fitbits actually make more sense. They’re lighter, generally have much better battery life, and many don’t even have a screen. The biggest thing that kept me from using one was having my health data split across different apps. If Fitbit now syncs directly with Apple Health, that’s one less reason not to use one.
Just like me, just got a Fitbit Air for sleep tracking as my watch is too bulky IMHO for sleeping. Going to update Apple Health now, just hope it doesn’t mess up the watch health tracking.

As an iOS developer I can confirm this is about 200 lines of code max and could be written with Claude Code in 10 minutes or less. In other words, about time. Wonder what forced their hand.

Easy. People don’t like to use two apps to review their health data. Google Health only offered read access from Apple Health. So they hoped people would pull in all of Apple Health data into their app. More data = $$$

I bought an Apple Watch last year because I was sick of my FitBit data not syncing with Health. Had to go through a whole convoluted process of syncing via a 3rd party app. At least no-one will have to do that now.

Interesting, but still hoping that those bands with sensors for the next Apple Watch iteration are only a new band a la Fit Bit Air, but from Apple.

Share your health data with Google? Let them profile you, monetize your most personal information, and sell access to whoever can pay.
Oh, boy! Google and Apple's cooperation is worth billions of dollars each year! The Search Agreement ($20 Billion) and The AI & Gemini Partnership ($1 Billion). Both are big dogs in Big Tech. Do you still believe that privacy exists?!

Does the apple health vitals app get populated with the date from Fitbit air when you use it for sleep ?

There’s an update that think allows this but doesn’t seem to be working for me. Basically I’ve got the Google Health app just for sleep.

AW to me is better at sleep tracking and more accurate with measuring heart rate. Main reason I got an AW. But I may try my Fitbit again.

I just find it uncomfortable in bed. If the new AW does blood pressure, it’ll be time for me to upgrade.
