The only time I’ve ever used a case with my iPhone, dating all the way back to the original iPhone, is when I am traveling and need a battery case. Cases are dumb.
You know what is dumb? Roughed up corners and cracked screens. You can try to be careful, but every time you move your phone from your pocket to your hand and back, it’s a chance for a slip.

I don’t bother with an Otterbox or anything but do use a slim, clear case to protect against most falls.

Been using an iPhone every day since 2007. Never dropped it. Never roughed up the corner and never cracked the screen. Other things I have not dropped include my MacBook Pro, my wallet, my keys, my daughter, etc.

You must be unusually coordinated, unlike myself. :) I yam what I yam...

I drop a phone about once a year, but never have any breaks or scratches, I use cases. But I did have my Motorola Razr (last year's version) drop out of my pocket into the toilet. That was before any foldable phone were even splash proof -- killed it. Before anyone makes fun of me, there are reasons my grip isn't very good...

Yeah, but not everybody is as awesome as you! Haha.
I've dropped my iPhone a few times but not from normal usage. Never from pocket to hand. Only time I ever 'dropped' my MBP was when it slipped off my backpack which somehow slipped off my desk. Luckily it landed on the backpack and not the ground. No dramas. Dropped my motorbike keys but never car keys. Dropped a few lasses in my time, those are the hardest drops...

So why live life with a case, which will never serve any purpose other than making the phone bigger, heavier, and uglier?

We're just weeks away from when Apple will announce the iPhone 13, which we're expecting to feature some considerable upgrades, including design, performance, cameras, and more. Like every year, rumors, leaks, and reports about what Apple has in store are abundant, with some more credible than others.

Rumors about the next iPhone typically begin emerging early in the year, meaning they may get forgotten as the months go by and the new iPhone launch approaches. To help readers of MacRumors, we've compiled this top five list consisting of some rumors about the iPhone 13 that you may have missed from the rumor news cycle.

Apple's plans for product improvements are subject to change over the course of the development process, so some of the older rumors may not be accurate under Apple's current plans. Additionally, the rumors below come from leaker Max Weinbach, who has a mixed track record when it comes to his previous claims of Apple’s plans.

Matte Black and Bronze Color Options

Apple is planning a new matte black color option for the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, according to a rumor that surfaced in March of this year. The rumor suggests that the current graphite option will be tweaked to include a darker, blacker tone, giving it a matte black finish.

According to that same rumor, Apple could also be planning a bronze color option, which could come in a tweaked version of the current gold option rather than an additional color option for customers. The rumor comes from leaker Max Weinbach, who accurately reported in January of last year, that the high-end 2020 iPhone lineup would feature an all-new navy blue color option.

Apple has offered new color options with its yearly iPhone updates in the past. On top of that, given we aren't expecting any significant design changes this year, offering new or tweaked color options could be Apple's way to help people differentiate the newer handsets from older models.

Anti-Fingerprint Coating for Stainless Steel Edges

iphone12profingerprints.jpg

One of the hallmark features of the iPhone 12 was the return of the flat-edged iPhone design, last seen on a flagship iPhone with the iPhone 5S in 2013. On the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, the edges are stainless steel, and as customers quickly learned as they received their new iPhones last year, it can be very prone to get fingerprints and smudges quickly.

Seemingly aware of the annoyance, Apple is planning a new anti-fingerprint coating for the stainless steel edges on the upcoming iPhones, according to a rumor from earlier in the year. While no specific details were given, the new coating could come as part of an updated manufacturing process, helping to reduce the visibility of fingerprints and smudges in day-to-day use.

Apple engineers and designers working on new iPhones are users of the products themselves, so it's likely that the issue of fingerprints and smudges has come up within Apple. Given that, it wouldn't be entirely surprising to see Apple take some steps to help increase the durability of the stainless steel edges, but what awaits to be seen is how effective the rumored coating is against fingerprints and smudges.

Built-In Beamforming Microphones

According to Weinbach, Apple plans to bring its beamforming microphone technology, currently in the AirPods lineup, to the iPhone 13. The technology will improve the quality of the microphones on the iPhone, resulting in better calls and recordings.

It is certainly possible that Apple could bring its beamforming technology to the iPhone, possibly marketing it towards improving video recordings and audio. Apple has heavily pushed the iPhone, especially higher-end models, as an all-in-one tool for professional videographers.

Stronger MagSafe Magnets

With the iPhone 12 last year, Apple introduced MagSafe for the iPhone. MagSafe on the iPhone opens a wide range of possibilities for easily attaching accessories to the back of the device. Apple has released an assortment of cases, a battery pack, and more for the MagSafe ecosystem. In some cases, however, customers have found the MagSafe magnets to be weak. With the iPhone 13, Apple is rumored to be reinforcing its MagSafe magnets to make them stronger.

Apple is expected to remove the Lightning port from the iPhone in a few years, and MagSafe seems to be Apple's solution for a portless future. With Apple's long-term intent for customers to increasingly rely on MagSafe, it will need to ensure the magnets and technology are strong and up to standard.

Get Ready to Take Pictures of the Stars

Apple has pushed aggressively in the past few years to improve the image quality and capabilities of the iPhone. Last year, the company focused on low-light photography, thanks to LiDAR, improved lenses, and advanced image signal processing. This year, we've heard a significant amount of information about the camera improvements Apple has planned for the iPhone 13, including ProRes and portrait mode for videos.

Additionally, Apple could focus on astrophotography, or photography of astronomy, for the upcoming iPhones. A rumor from February suggested that the iPhone 13 will automatically detect when a user is pointing to the sky and accordingly adjust exposure and other camera settings.

With Apple's push to continuously improve photography on the iPhone, this rumor seems plausible, especially when considered that an updated suite of camera features could be the iPhone 13's biggest selling point.

Conclusion

These are just a few of the rumors we've heard about over the past few months in the lead-up to the iPhone 13's launch next month. More recent and reliable reporting has suggested the new iPhones will have a smaller notch, 120Hz variable refresh rate displays, and more. Check out our comprehensive iPhone 13 roundup for everything we know about the upcoming iPhones.

That bronze is fire ❤️‍🔥

I'm still going to wait until 2022 for a new phone and MBP. iPhone 13 isn't worth it if you already have a fairly recent one and the 2021 MBP will be for early adopters.

p.s. I wonder what the iPhone 20 will be like. Crazy to think about that.

So why live life with a case, which will never serve any purpose other than making the phone bigger, heavier, and uglier?
Because I don't live a humble life. My phone would be scratched harder than a newbie asking for the Marquis Package at the Hellfire Club.

Me all year: "I love my blue 12 Pro Max. I've been waiting for blue for 10 years. I'll probably keep this phone a few years for once"

Me today: "****, there's gonna be a matte black..."

This is How Apple explained it to the police. And as they wouldn’t have known the Code otherwise….

Apple explained it to the police? Do you have any proof of that? Because:

(1) apple isn’t doing any explaining to the police
(2) you can’t use “light” to figure out the code

I took a cool picture of the stars on my iPhone 12 a few months ago. It took me a few minutes to get the settings right. It would be great to have my phone automatically detect and get the settings right. I'm sure it would do better than I.

I know most people don't care, but I'd love to have an anti-fingerprint coating on the edges. I don't ever use a case and hate the fingerprints that show on the stainless steel.

You disagree with the fact that I don't use a case and would like anti-fingerprint coating on the edges?

Hahaha Good to know!

Iphone 13 rumors you may have missed?

How about a throttling A15? The A15 is rumored to have more GPU cores, but the high performance overheats the chip faster and can result in quicker throttling.

And how about the recent rumor of increased prices?

A more expensive iphone with a faster chip that won't go anywhere since it's severely thermal limited. Sounds dope ...
Finally someone said it! Yea what is the point of bragging to have the fastest and most powerful chip of all manufacturers when your 12 pro max is dimming to pitch black 5 min out in the sun or 10 min in game..this is frustrating given its price! Who cares of the world best performance if i cant see dog sht after 10 min on the screen. Now even faster chip , 120hz and bigger battery and STILL NO ACTIVE COOLING! So full of bs its beyond me.

At the end of the day, someone must ask: which of these rumors are true? and which are for marketing purposes only?

Please don't get my hopes up.

I think they only fixed it by using post-processing in certain conditions for pictures, not videos. I think a proper fix would need an overhaul of their camera system.

I recently switched from 6s to 12 finally and it was one of the first things that stood out to me, especially at night. I don't get it how their engineers thought it was acceptable.

Watch this:
Agreed this lens flare is terrible. What sucks is for non shutter bugs like me I didn’t notice this was a consistent and easily able to reproduce issue on my 12 mini until after 14 days - full refund window.

Apple should honor full refund up to 6 months because if they actually tested these cameras they know the issue well.

this years 13 series announcement I’ll be paying very close attention to photos they show, how many are with direct light towards the lens or off-set light incoming to the camera in both pics and videos!!

overall I love my 12 mini but as I’m starting to take more photos - most I’ve ever done in my life the more I’m annoyed with: lens flare and closeups (macro shots).

Isn’t the lens flare said to be fixed in iOS 15?
