I think half the frustration is that there's really not much more to do with a phone. Somewhat better camera, a little faster, smaller dynamic island, switching metals, harder glass — they're all so minor.

What would be nice is an actual new product that does something people want. Think something like good looking home automation equipment, new health devices, or maybe glasses (but not gigantic AR goggles).

Sadly Apple doesn't remember how to anodize aluminum in colors that bright anymore. They got closer with this year's orange, though, so maybe they're rediscovering that whole process.

If you are interested in the features of a phone is not gonna ship for at least seven months, you need to get a freaking life. Haven’t read a single report on iPhone 18 and I never will until the d*mn things are announced.

Then I have three months to read about it and half of what I read will not even come true.

Even then, I won’t own one for at least another two years. The only feature Apple has made available in the last few years that has interested me has been translate. I bought a used iPhone 16e for a really good price to go with my second generation AirPods Pro to get Apple AI.

I’ve been a loyal Apple user for the last 30 years, but I’m not loyal to their retail prices on new items.

I tell you what, Apple: I’ll buy an iPhone 18 Pro Max if you include a way to UNINSTALL AI and Siri. Not turn them off… UNINSTALL them.

Once again, that render is not based on any actual shades of burgundy, brown, or purple that have been leaked. I don't know who did the render, but there is no way that shade of purple ever got consideration. If we get purple, it will be a dark, metallic purple like a BMW.

Hopefully they release an actual Space Black one, but if not, I’ll spring for the loud purple one.
Fits your namesake 😈

Personally I'd love to see them do an actual real saturated purple like that, rather than all their previous attempts that have been overly red, or overly blue, or like adding one drop of purple to either a vat of white or a vat of black.

Drip drip drip of minute incremental improvements. keeping the Apple sheep content and subservient once again in order to part with their hard earned cash on a yearly basis.

I think I'm done with this s**t.

I have an 11Pro that is still like new - well, except the battery shows 70% health. I was holding out until I really needed to replace it - which may well be the 18Pro.

To reduce the size of the Dynamic Island, it'll take more than moving just the flood illuminator under the display, since the flood illuminator is relatively tiny. Instant Digital's leaked photo of a front-facing camera assembly actually showed both the IR camera and the flood illuminator moved to (and presumably under) the upper left corner of the display, so maybe that's how Apple will shrink the DI, but the IR camera and flood illuminator might actually remain where they currently are, at the far left end of the DI, but under a redesigned portion of the display layer that sits just above them, which would allow IR from the flood illuminator to be projected through it and onto your face, and then back down through it to be received by the IR camera, while also allowing IR from the dot projector, which for now might remain under the clear DI cutout, to go down through this special layer, after bouncing off your face, to be received by the IR camera.

I suspect variable aperture will be particularly pointless. There's almost no reasonable looking depth of field already and the lenses are currently wide open which should give you shallow DoF. Closing an aperture will only increase DoF and reduce the already limited light. And there's a huge amount of distortion correction which mungs everything outside the centre of the frame already.

tiny sensor + less light = urgh.

Edit: just checked. The quoted base f/1.78 is actually equivalent to f/8 on a normal camera. Which is terrible.

Good comparison - FF camera sensor vs entire iPhone 13 pro camera array....

A variable aperture would be good for reducing light when shooting video. currently the phone uses the shutter to do that and it creates these really jittery photos with zero motion blur on anything.

But if that's the goal, then a better option would be an electronic variable ND filter like Samsung uses.

Unfortunately phone cameras are about as good as they're ever going to get without getting thicker. Only the Xiaomi MOS (Modular Optical System) - which is essentially just a camera-in-a-lens system that magnetically sticks onto the back of a phone and uses the phone software - seems like a viable solution to people wanting the smallest possible camera kit for travel etc.

While the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are still seven months away, an analyst has revealed five new features the devices will allegedly have.

Rumored color options for the iPhone 18 Pro models

In a research note with investment firm GF Securities on Thursday, analyst Jeff Pu outlined the following upgrades for the iPhone 18 Pro models:
  • Smaller Dynamic Island: It has been rumored that Face ID's flood illuminator will be moved under the screen on the iPhone 18 Pro models, paving the way for a smaller Dynamic Island on the devices.
  • Variable Aperture: The main 48-megapixel Fusion camera on both iPhone 18 Pro models is rumored to have a variable aperture, which would allow users to control the amount of light that passes through the camera's lens and reaches the sensor. This would provide greater control over depth of field. However, given that iPhones have smaller image sensors due to smartphone size constraints, it is unclear exactly how meaningful this improvement would be.
  • A20 Pro Chip: Apple's next-generation A20 Pro chip is expected to use TSMC's first-generation 2nm process, whereas the A19 Pro chip is 3nm. With a 2nm architecture and a new packaging design, the A20 Pro chip should deliver solid year-over-year performance and power efficiency gains.
  • N2 Chip: All of the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air models are equipped with an Apple-designed N1 chip that enables Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. Apple says the N1 chip also improves the overall performance and reliability of features like Personal Hotspot and AirDrop. iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to have Apple's next-generation N2 chip, but is not yet known what improvements would come with this upgrade.
  • C2 Modem: Apple's custom C1 cellular modem for 5G and LTE debuted in the iPhone 16e last year, and that was followed by a C1X chip in the iPhone Air. Apple says the C1X modem is up to twice as fast as the C1 modem, and the most power-efficient modem in an iPhone ever. The improvements should continue with Apple's third-generation C2 modem in the iPhone 18 Pro models.
These are only some of the new features and changes planned for the iPhone 18 Pro models, with additional ones outlined in our iPhone 18 roundup.

Apple is expected to release the iPhone 18 Pro models in September.

Those colors ALONE will sell iPhones like hotcakes. Apple doesn’t have to add/update anything new to the iPhone. The vast majority of people want the new color because it will be considered ‘the latest iPhone’. The current specs of the iPhone 17 series is just the best out there. They should stop spending money on new tech/AI and focus on colors.

There’s always something. Someone said that before a touchscreen appeared. Satellite based connectivity, pc replacement, etc.

Everything points to the fact that the 18 Pro will be a minor update. It is good to see yearly camera improvements. Will be good if the sensor size increases along with the implementation of variable aperture.
